Target: Dr. M. Sanjayan, Host of PBS’ “EARTH A New Wild”
Goal: Thank Dr. Sanjayan for showing the role humans can play in environmental conservation.
PBS’ series “EARTH A New Wild” puts forth a fresh approach to conservation: humans and wild animals need each other to survive. Meeting with local scientists and researchers, conservation biologist and host Dr. M. Sanjayan takes his viewers from the forests of Tanzania to the suburbs of the United States to explore ways that people around the world are working to save rare and revered animals and restore the degraded habitat in which they live. Applaud “EARTH A New Wild” for envisioning a “wild” in which human impact on the natural environment can be positive.
“EARTH A New Wild” has its share of scenes of cute animals, but some of its deeper lessons might be surprising. For instance, the bunch of baby panda cubs featured in the first episode have to get help from both their mothers and local researchers in Sichuan in order to re-develop their “wild” instincts and survive on their own in their newly restored habitat.
In Tanzania, Dr. Sanjayan met with renowned primatologist Jane Goodall, who demonstrated how she has helped subsidize trees for local villagers. When planted, the trees would serve as corridors for chimps that would otherwise be threatened by in-breeding to cross urbanizing areas and encounter other populations. Likewise, in a true case of how human tolerance plays a role in co-existence, tigers in Bangladesh are the unlikely protectors of vital mangrove forests, frightening away deer that would otherwise overgraze and degrade the forest.
“EARTH A New Wild,” presents the complex and, at times, unexpected ecology at play in conservation projects around the world. By signing the petition below, you can show your support of this new paradigm of conservation and the series “EARTH A New Wild” that celebrates it.
Dear Dr. Sanjayan,
I am writing to say a sincere thank you for all the work you have done to make PBS’ “EARTH A New Wild” a reality. You are raising crucial awareness of how humans can have a positive contribution to environmental/wildlife conservation. Thank you for helping viewers around the world deepen their appreciation and understanding of the natural world.
You have brought forth a valuable alternative to the view that when it comes to environmental sustainability, it is humans versus nature. It is my hope that “EARTH A New Wild” inspires all who watch it to rethink their role as humans in protecting the vast biodiversity they have inherited. I wish to express my gratitude for your extensive efforts and wish you the best of luck in your future projects.
