Ditch Inefficient and Wasteful Biofuel Use

Target: Jonathan Male, Director of U.S. Department of Energy Bioenergy Technologies

Goal: Stop the use of biofuels in favor of more efficient energy sources.

The Obama Administration currently supports mandates for inefficient and poverty-promoting biofuels set under the Bush Administration. The policies created by these mandates have resulted in driving up food prices and have done relatively little to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions. The Administration needs to recognize that its investment in biofuels is a faulty use of resources.

While biofuels attempt to be an alternative to fossil fuels, the resources used to create them are too valuable. Biofuels are highly inefficient, and the crops and farmland devoted specifically for biofuels are better used for food production than fuel. A common misbelief is that biofuels are carbon-free sources of energy, but biofuels emit greenhouse gases just like other carbon-based forms of energy.

Biofuels are also an inefficient way to convert sunlight into energy. For example, solar panels are at the very least 50% more efficient at capturing sunlight and turning it into power. The current biofuels policy delegates as much as 40% of the American corn crop production to be used for fuel, which only offsets less than 6% of the nation’s demand each year. The cost of using biofuels will continue to increase as farmland will be needed to meet the global demand for food, which is expected to increase 70% by 2050.

By signing the petition below, you will be urging the director of the United States Department of Energy Bioenergy Technologies to divest the current inefficient use of resources and investigate more efficient methods of alternative energy.

Dear Director Male,

The current investment in biofuels is unsustainable. Biofuels are highly inefficient and use valuable farmlands necessary for the production of crops as food.

Not only have the current biofuel policies driven up food prices, but also biofuels have done relatively little for reducing the overall greenhouse gas emissions.

I am urging you to advise more efficient uses of our precious resources and to investigate more efficient methods of renewable energy. Please take action to end the current misguided biofuel policies and force the Obama Administration to invest in more effective energy policies.
