Target: Speaker of the House John Boehner
Goal: Reject plan to eliminate mandatory maternity care coverage in all insurance options.
Three GOP lawmakers are trying to deny people maternity care coverage with a new plan meant to replace the Affordable Care Act which would remove the requirement for all health insurance companies to cover expenses related to pregnancy. This move has been justified with the reasoning that people can choose whether or not to have children, which is incredibly ironic considering the fact that the GOP is widely opposed to allowing pregnant people the right to choose whether they have the child or have an abortion.
Compared to many countries, including those that have a much lower overall wealth, maternity health in the U.S. is abysmal. Our infant mortality rate is three times higher than it is in countries like Japan and Finland. Much of this can be explained by the fact that there are so many poor individuals in the U.S. while health care costs are astronomical. It’s clear that lack of access to pregnancy-related health coverage is killing infants.
This attempt to leave poor pregnant people out in the cold has nothing to do with a right to choose. The GOP is clearly only interested in pandering to corrupt, money-hungry health insurance companies that will see greater profits if they don’t have to pay for maternity care. If Republicans truly wanted to defend the right to choice, they would not be simultaneously trying to block access to abortion. Demand that this new plan be rejected by the party unless they want to prove themselves to be greedy hypocrites.
Dear Speaker Boehner,
Three GOP legislators have proposed a replacement to the Affordable Care Act called the “Patient Choice, Affordability, Responsibility, and Empowerment Act” which, among other changes, will remove the requirement that all health insurance plans include maternity care coverage. Apparently, despite the fact that the GOP is so interested in keeping embryos and fetuses alive, these lawmakers want to make it more difficult to keep them and the people carrying them healthy.
Maternal health and infant mortality rates in our country are already embarrassing. If we go back to denying our people the right to pregnancy-related health care, we’ll be ensuring that these problems become worse and that more pregnant people, fetuses and infants will die due to preventable health problems. If you really care about prenatal and infant life, why would you support denying access to maternal health care?
If you claim to be pro-life, then you must reject this new plan and any plan that would remove required maternal health care coverage. Many people come to have health issues because of the choices they made, but you don’t deny them affordable health care because of it. Speak out against this piece of legislation and make sure it doesn’t pass.
