Stop Serving Meat on Meatless Mondays

Goal: Make Meatless Mondays 100 percent meat and cruelty-free.

Currently on Mondays, California State University Long Beach’s dining halls promote Meatless Mondays, while continuing to serve meat-based options. The University encourages students living in residential housing to go meat free by posting Meatless Monday signs throughout their three cafeterias. Merely suggesting the idea of Meatless Mondays to students is not enough. California State University Long Beach must not only promote Meatless Monday, but actually execute them by eliminating meat from Monday menus.

On average, Americans today consume up to 75 pounds more meat each year than previous generations, according to the Monday Campaigns. The University’s two on-campus dinning halls and its off-campus site all serve plant-based options alongside meat based options at every meal. Reducing  University residents’ intake of meat once a week by fully committing to Meatless Mondays will positively impact students’ health, lower their carbon footprint, and help to promote a cruelty free diet.

This petition calls for the removal of meat from Monday’s menu at California State University Long Beach. Promoting Meatless Monday while simultaneously serving meat defeats the initiative’s true intentions, and deprives students from receiving the full benefits of this event. Removing meat from the Monday menu would allow student residents an opportunity to go green, become healthier, and help animals.


Dear Ms. Conoley,

California State University Long Beach’s dining halls currently promote Meatless Mondays while simultaneously serving meat-based dishes on this day. Hillside, Parkside, and Beachside dining halls encourage students to go meat free by posting signs for Meatless Monday throughout their cafeterias. This is a step in the right direction and as you know, the University’s three dining halls all serve plant-based options at every meal alongside meat dishes. Continuing to serve meat on Mondays while highlighting Meatless Mondays deprives CSU Long Beach residents of the initiative’s full benefits.

Studies show that reducing an individual’s meat intake by one day a week decreases the risk of obesity, heart disease, and even cancer. Removing meat from Monday’s menu would allow students a chance to improve their health, lower their carbon footprint and introduce them to plant-based dining.

We hope that you support making the University’s Meatless Mondays 100 percent meat free. Please change Monday’s menu at CSU Long Beach dining halls to an all plant-based selection.
