Target: Congressman Aaron Schock’s Former Press Secretary Benjamin Cole
Goal: Obtain an apology from Benjamin Cole for his racist comments posted on Facebook.
Recently, an affiliate of Rep. Aaron Schock made extremely racist comments about African American people in his neighborhood, according to evidence found by activist website ThinkProgress. Benjamin Cole, Schock’s now former press secretary, posted videos of two African Americans, comparing them to animals in his comments. While the videos have since been deleted, Cole has not come forward with a statement about the incident.
Cole’s actions and his relations to Schock definitely pose problems for the credibility and reputation of the Congressman. However, this problem delves into much more serious issues, perpetuating hate, dehumanization, objectification, and racism to the public. During the incident, the National Zoo was closed, and he explained that the closing of the zoo has “forced the animals to conduct their mating rituals on my street,” referring to two African Americans.
These comments come at a time when racism has been apparent all over the country. With many shootings of young black men and the protests resulting because of them, Cole’s racist comments only helps to add to the growing divide.
These public racist comments are hateful, irresponsible, and cruel, and this perpetuation of hate should not be tolerated. Thankfully, these comments have been removed from Cole’s Facebook page, but we have still heard no comment from him. By signing below, you will be demanding that Benjamin Cole apologizes for his reckless, thoughtless comments. The victims of this racism as well as the general public deserve an apology for his blatantly racist comments.
Dear Mr. Cole,
Recently, evidence has come forward of racist comments you had made on your Facebook account. In these comments, you compared African American individuals to animals, dehumanizing and objectifying them. These comments lacked sensitivity to the growing problems of racism in our country and are unacceptable.
Fortunately, these comments have been removed from your facebook page. However, no comment has been released on your position on the situation. The victims of your racist comments deserve to be treated with respect just like every other human being. Please make a public apology for these victims.
This country is in a state of unrest due to many racial conflicts all over the nation. The perpetuation of hate through silly comments like these only contributes to the problem. Please take responsibilities for your actions.
