Success: Social Security Benefits for Same-Sex Couples

Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: Applaud plan to make legally married same-sex couples eligible for social security benefits regardless of where they live.

Social security is an essential part of the American government. The benefits distributed by the program support retired professionals, and leave a widow or widower with support after the tragedy of death. However, these basic human rights have long been denied for many same-sex couples. Praise the federal government’s initiative to finally extend these critical benefits to all married couples, regardless of sexual orientation.

Currently, a same-sex couple who marries in a state where the union is legal but then moves to one where it is not would lose their social security benefits. But thanks to the efforts of many, including those here at ForceChange, President Barack Obama has dedicated a portion of his 2016 fiscal budget to making same-sex couples eligible for social security regardless of where they live.

This is a major win for the LGBT community, and is yet another example of how President Obama is actively fighting for equality. In his recent state of the union, he became the first president to say the words “transgender” and “bisexual,” and has been a strong advocate for marriage equality since the beginning of his presidency. With this commitment, he has taken another step toward his goal of not leaving anyone behind.

Now, the budget must be approved by the Republican-controlled Congress. This is another large barrier to overcome, and we must show the President and the Congress that we support this decision wholeheartedly. Please sign this petition to demonstrate your approval and encouragement.

Dear Mr. President,

Throughout your presidency you have fought tirelessly for basic human rights. Again and again, I have been convinced that you are truly working toward equality for all, including those in the LGBT community.

Recently, you announced that a section of your 2016 fiscal budget would be dedicated to ensuring that married same-sex couples will receive the same social security benefits that their heterosexual counterparts often take for granted. I applaud your decision to do so, because to expect the LGBT community to pay taxes to a system that will offer them no benefit is both ridiculous and hypocritical.

Same-sex couples deserve the benefits they work for every day as American citizens. I am ecstatic that you have chosen to voice your support for equality, and I stand with you as your budget heads to Congress for approval.

  1. I would HAPPILY sign this IF the letter could be amended. I certainly do not want to start any letter to Obama with “Throughout your presidency you have fought tirelessly for basic human rights”…that is a load of crap. Please put together a petition/letter that sticks to these facts…thanking him for this one thing. Otherwise, you will lose signers that do not like his other ‘Chicago style criminal’ antics he has done since in office.

    • Agreed. I am ashamed to have voted for him in 2008, and have listened to him talk “progressive” while acting far right for years, to say nothing about his mass-murdering war crimes, and now pushing “NAFTA on Steroids” to complete the turning over of this country to the corporations.
