Reduce Consumption of Harmful Sugary Beverages

Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: Support proposed tax on sweetened beverages set to help curb the consumption of harmful sweetened drinks.

Obesity is a widespread problem across America—studies show that nearly one-third of Americans are considered obese. The food industry does nothing to help as it constantly markets fatty, sugary, high-caloric food and beverages that are inexpensive, easily accessible, and quick to get. Recently, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro introduced a new bill that would help to curb America’s taste for unhealthy, sugary drinks by placing a tax on sweetened beverages. While Berkeley became the first city to pass this initiative, also known as the SWEET Act, many cities have failed to follow.

It is no secret that America’s diet consists of fast, fatty, sweet foods. However, the problem goes far beyond what we’re eating. Popular beverages among Americans often contain alarming amounts of sugar. While soda is the most infamous, sweetened teas, flavored coffees, and juices also contain high levels of sugar that when consumed in excess can lead to obesity and other serious health concerns.

The American Heart Association’s recommended daily dose of sugar is 26 grams for women and 36 grams for men. However, as much as 70 grams of sugar can be found in one individually packaged beverage. Considering this, some American’s may be ingesting four to five times their recommended daily sugar intake.

While excessive consumption of sugar can lead to obesity, it can also increase of the chances of type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. By placing a small tax on sweetened beverages, it can increase the likelihood that American’s will think twice about the amount of sugar they’re consuming and hopefully decrease the amount of sugary beverages that are ingested. Urge for federal action by making this tax a national issue so that we can help to solve America’s obesity issue by signing the petition below.

Dear President Obama,

A new initiative has been introduced to place a tax on sweetened beverages, which could have a huge impact on America’s consumption habitats. Obesity is a growing problem in our country with the excessive consumption of sugar known to contribute to it. By placing a tax on unhealthy sweetened beverages like soda, sweet tea, flavored coffee, and juices, America may be persuaded to think twice before indulging in these unhealthy drinks.

This initiative, also known as the SWEET Act, has succeeded in Berkeley, and many state governments are working to pass this initiative in cities across the nation. However, I believe this is an important issue for the entire country and deserves to be recognized by the federal government. I urge you to help pass this bill so that taxing sweetened beverages becomes a federal law. The health of many American’s could benefit from your actions.
