Target: Deputy Attorney General Tawnya Boulan Austin
Goal: Applaud the punishment of a “revenge porn” operator who used nude photos to blackmail thousands of women.
A notorious revenge porn dealer has been convicted of 27 felony counts including extortion and identity theft thanks to the efforts of the outraged community. Kevin Bollaert solicited nude photos from spurned ex-boyfriends (and sometimes ex-girlfriends) that he then posted on a public website without the permission of the person in the photo in order to humiliate them–a practice referred to as “revenge porn.” Bollaert took this a step further by also posting the victim’s personal information and blackmailing them for money.
After many months of activist work to get this man arrested and punished for his disgusting behavior, including the creating and signing of petitions like ForceChange’s Punish Man Behind Pornography Blackmail, he has finally been convicted and will be held in a county jail while he awaits another trial for yet more crimes. He will also be prohibited from contacting any of his victims.
The prosecutor in this case, Deputy Attorney General Tawnya Boulan Austin, might never have even gotten the case to trial without the help of activists dedicated to protecting innocent people, especially women, from a gross violation of personal privacy and autonomy. However, she does deserve our thanks for her hard work in pushing for so many felony counts and for having him jailed until his next trial. Sign below to let the Deputy Attorney General know that her efforts are appreciated.
Dear Deputy Attorney General Austin,
I’m writing to thank you for your efforts in the case against Kevin Bollaert, the man who was charged for running an exploitative revenge porn website. Far too many people, especially women, have fallen victim to sites like his that solicit nude photos from angry exes which are then used to humiliate and shame the subject of the photo. All of this is done without the consent of the victim, who did absolutely nothing wrong, and can often result in them being harassed by strangers.
This practice has already ruined lives as women are fired from their jobs and shunned from families and friends through no fault of their own. People should be able to share photos of themselves with significant others without having to worry about this kind of abuse. It’s essential that we send the message that running revenge porn sites will result in serious jail time. With the conviction of Bollaert, you’ve sent this message loud and clear.
Thank you for getting this awful, exploitative man put behind bars where he belongs. I also appreciate that you fought to keep him away from the public while he waits for his next trial. Thanks to you, his victims have found some level of justice, and other men will think twice before engaging in the horrific practice of revenge porn.
