Target: St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman
Goal: Ban greyhound racing in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Records have been released showing that a greyhound died every three days on a Florida dog race track between June 2013 and December 2014, with Derby Lane in St. Petersburg, Florida leading the state with 25 deaths.
Legislation to track the number of deaths only went into effect recently and it is now making others aware of the tragic life many racing greyhounds have. Public Relations Manager Magi Thomley Williams wrote in an email saying that “the racing dogs are some of the best cared for animals anywhere,” but reports of numerous greyhound deaths have them racing on the day they died, which doesn’t seem to indicate adequate care.
Some dogs were euthanized for severe injuries that made them unable to race, while others had seizures or died of unknown reasons. No matter what the cause is, animals that race only to entertain and make a profit is unethical. When money is the point of the facility, it doesn’t matter if a trained veterinarian is on staff because the greyhounds will be pushed to brink in order to bring in the most cash.
Reporting their deaths have raised awareness to the cruel life of a racing greyhound, but it isn’t enough. Please sign the petition below and demand that St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman lead the state and ban racing greyhounds in St. Petersburg.
Dear Mayor Kriseman,
Reports have recently come out that reveal the number of greyhound deaths at each dog track in Florida. The records show that a greyhound died every three days between June 2013 and December 2014, with Derby Lane in St. Petersburg being the highest with 25 deaths total.
This number is too high and shows that greyhounds are not being properly treated at Derby Lane. While a veterinarian may examine the dogs every week, it does little help when they are racing to make the business a profit. These dogs are being pushed much too far and racing them for entertainment is cruel.
Animal rights is a serious topic and many Floridians want a progressive stance on this issue. Please be an example to all Florida cities and ban dog tracks in St. Petersburg so that greyhounds are not pushed to exhaustion for money.
