Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Don’t open up a vast area of East Coast waters to dangerous oil and gas drilling.
The Obama administration is planning to open up the Eastern Seaboard to leasing for oil and gas drilling. This decision could have a profound impact on the environmental and economic future of the states of Virginia, the Carolinas and Georgia. Opening the Atlantic waters would put the coasts of these states at risk from an environmental disaster such as the BP oil spill that painted the Gulf Coast black in 2010. Advocacy groups say that the intended drilling could harm tourism, fishing and other coastal industries that are already major drivers of the Southeastern economy. Additionally, because so little is known about the proposed Atlantic lease sale areas, several years would be devoted to exploration, furthering potential environmental harm to ecologically sensitive waters.
The five-year government plan to sell oil and gas development leases is set for 2017 to 2022. The lease sale is an opportunity for greedy oil companies to make billions of dollars, some of which will go into state coffers as royalties. Fortunately, the Obama administration pointed out that their proposal would be subject to revision, along with over 20 public hearings on the plan. Although it does not require congressional approval, this is the time to gear up, bring awareness and fight the proposal. President Obama should not appease the Republican or oil industry’s agendas and rather continue his staunch commitment to fighting climate change and utilizing alternative energy strategies to make America energy independent.
It could be a decade before the government sells a drilling lease, which means this is the perfect time to start rallying opposition to this proposal. By signing the petition below you can help urge the President and his administration to stop oil and gas exploration and drilling before it begins.
Dear President Obama,
Your proposal to open up the Eastern Seaboard to leasing for oil and gas exploration and drilling must be discontinued. Risky offshore drilling not only threatens our coastal states’ communities, jobs and beloved beaches, but also puts our distinctive coastal economy in the hands of greedy oil companies that have little incentive to tighten safety regulations on their drilling procedures. Like many analysts have stated, we just do not know enough — especially about the repercussions — to begin drilling in the Atlantic.
Our coastal communities are the backbone of hundreds of towns and cities along the Southeastern coast, providing countless jobs, multibillion-dollar tourism industries, multimillion-dollar fishing industries, and critical local tax revenues. Let’s be pragmatic about this. Although this plan may move America closer to energy independence, there are other non-detrimental methods, such as producing energy through solar and wind farms, that can achieve this goal and still generate a returning investment.
As you and the rest of America know, we cannot afford another BP oil crisis and lose our fragile economy to a misguided proposal just to submit to the Republican and oil industry’s agendas. Mr. President, your legacy should not be tarnished over such a ludicrous plan. Please take an initiative to stop this scheme before it begins.
