Praise Arrest of Man Who Beat Puppy with Shovel

Target: Captain Martine N. Materasso 41st Precinct, New York City

Goal: Thank police for quickly apprehending a man who beat a puppy and left it to die.

New York resident Raul Cruz has been arrested on several charges related to the beating of a pit bull puppy with a shovel. The night of the beating, police received several 911 reports from residents who heard the dog’s cries. Officers responding to the call found the six-month-old puppy, named Hennessy, buried in a snowbank with serious injuries.

From their windows, neighbors reportedly witnessed Cruz punching the dog and beating it with a shovel. He then buried the dog in a snowbank in his backyard and left it to die. One witness who captured the incident on videotape told police that this was not the first time he had witnessed Cruz abusing the dog.

The dog, which was emaciated and severely injured, was taken to the station house for some food before being transported to a local animal hospital and placed in the care of the ASPCA. An examination of the dog uncovered fractures to her skull, legs, ribs, and back. She was extremely malnourished and missing teeth. At this point, it is unknown whether the dog will ever fully recover.

Cruz was apprehended shortly afterward still carrying the tool used in the beating. He was charged with aggravated cruelty to an animal and torture, injuring or not feeding an animal, and criminal possession of a weapon. Cruz could face up to five years in prison and a substantial fine for the aggravated cruelty charge alone.

Many cases of animal cruelty go unpunished because they are considered “low priority” for both police and prosecutors. Not only did police do their best to take care of the injured dog, they ensured that the man who brutally beat the dog is brought to justice. Sign the petition below to thank the NYPD officers who rescued Hennessy and apprehended her abuser.

Dear Captain Martine N. Materasso,

When responding to a call of animal abuse in the early hours of the morning, officers of the 41st Precinct came upon an emaciated puppy with severe injuries buried in a snowbank. The officers carefully dug the dog out, warmed it up, fed it, and sought veterinary attention. They also successfully arrested the perpetrator under several charges, including aggravated animal cruelty.

With video evidence provided by concerned neighbors, it is highly likely that Raul Cruz, the perpetrator of the attack, will face jail time. We, the undersigned, applaud the officers’ efforts to care for the dog and bring its abuser to justice.
