Target: Virginia General Law Subcommittee Chair Nick L. Rush
Goal: Applaud the rejection of a homophobic, pro-discrimination bill.
A bill that would have made it legal for businesses, schools, and even hospitals to discriminate against LGBT persons in Virginia was unanimously struck down. This piece of legislation would have been a huge step backwards for the fight for equality and could have put lives at risk as medical professionals would have been allowed to refuse people services based on their “religious and moral convictions.”
Thanks to the efforts of activists and all those who signed petitions like ForceChange’s Don’t Allow Homophobic Business Practices, the committee that was considering the bill were made aware of the general public’s outrage over the idea of such rank homophobia and soundly rejected it. The LGBT community in Virginia can now rest assured that not only will their right to equal access to medical care and education be protected, but the general public has their backs.
By signing this petition, you’ll thank the Virginia committee that voted down this bill for listening to the voices of the people and standing up for equality and fairness. Any time we can show homophobic legislators that their discriminatory bills will not be tolerated, it’s a victory for both the LGBT community and for true American values.
Dear Mr. Rush,
Your subcommittee recently unanimously voted down a piece of legislation that would have made it legal for Virginia businesses, educators, and even medical professionals to refuse services to LGBT persons based on “religious and moral convictions.” It would have allowed schools to refuse to educate people based on their sexuality and gender identity and could have even protected doctors who refused to help people in life-threatening medical situations.
This kind of discrimination cannot be tolerated in any nation that wants to claim itself to be civilized. I’m writing to thank you for soundly defeating this plainly homophobic bill before it could see the light of day. You and your committee have shown that you are on the side of equal rights, fairness and justice, and that you listen to the desires of the general public–most of whom are against this kind of pro-discrimination legislation.
Thank you again for stopping this bill in its tracks. You’ve proven to any homophobic politician in the state of Virginia that they won’t get anywhere with their anti-LGBT bills, even if they try to hide their prejudice under the guise of “religious freedom.” Religious beliefs are not a license to deny others their basic rights to education, health care, and being treated like a human being. Thank you for doing the right thing.
