Target: Eric Garcetti, Mayor of Los Angeles
Goal: Applaud pledge to help 100,000 immigrants apply for relief programs
Thousands of undocumented immigrants in the L.A. region will soon get help in applying to President Obama’s deferred action programs, which would protect against deportation. The city of Los Angeles along with the California Community Foundation, a philanthropy organization which works with immigration issues, is hoping to raise ten million dollars to aid immigrants. Applaud this joint effort to help these immigrants receive the protection they need and deserve.
California Community Foundation’s director, Antonia Hernandez, reports that the foundation has already raised funds, mainly from other organizations such as the Weingart Foundation and the California Endowment, totaling nearly five million dollars. The funds will eventually be distributed among local nonprofits that work with immigrants, providing much-needed assistance as they help immigrants progress through the complicated application process for the new deferred action programs.
L.A. officials’ decision to fundraise comes in lieu of President Obama’s expansion of immigrant policy. One corresponding program would provide temporary work permits and deferred deportation to some immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. A similar program would apply to parents whose children are U.S. citizens. By signing the petition below, you can recognize these important steps in helping immigrants receive the full benefits these programs provide them.
