Don’t Require Pre-Abortion Ultrasounds

Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: Don’t let Republicans require invasive medical procedures before women can consent to an abortion.

House Republicans are once again trying to limit women’s right to choose by introducing a mandatory ultrasound bill. This bill would require any woman seeking an abortion to receive an ultrasound to look at the fetus before her decision can be considered “informed consent.” Women who seek abortions are already well aware of the process—requiring them to undergo an ultrasound is an invasive and patronizing attempt to frighten women out of choosing abortion. Unsurprisingly, the bill is sponsored by ten Republican men—none of the 23 GOP women in the House signed the bill.

Because many abortions take place before an ultrasound can detect an image, doctors in some states have to resort to transvaginal ultrasounds, in which a probe most be inserted into the woman’s body. The procedure is unnecessary from a medical standpoint, and can subject women to increased physical and emotional pain. Because this bill would affect the country as a whole, this could become a reality for women seeking abortions anywhere in the US. There is no excuse for the government requiring women to undergo an unnecessary medical procedure; it’s an invasive, blatant attack on the rights of women.

This bill can’t be allowed to pass. Forcing women to undergo a potentially traumatic medical procedure at the federal level strips away the rights of women to make their own decisions about their lives and safety. Having an abortion is a difficult and life-changing decision already, and allowing the government to force women to undergo a traumatic procedure to convince them to change their minds is a gross invasion of personal rights. Ask President Obama to veto this bill if it passes and help protect women’s rights.

Dear President Obama,

House Republicans are trying to pass a bill that would require every woman seeking an abortion to undergo an invasive medical procedure before her consent is considered to be “informed.” Ultrasound bills like the one the House is proposing have passed in other states, and, for women early in their pregnancy, that means being subjected to transvaginal ultrasounds, which require a probe to be inserted into their body.

The procedure is invasive and manipulative, asking women who are already making a difficult decision to be subjected to a traumatic procedure before their decision is considered valid. This is a blatant attack on women’s rights and the bill cannot be allowed to pass, or women throughout the country will be subject to federally-required medical procedures, a gross invasion of privacy and the freedom to choose.

Please don’t let this bill pass if it reaches your desk. Women in this country deserve to have their consent respected without invasive medical procedures.
