Target: President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet
Goal: Applaud recognition of same-sex unions in Chile.
Chile’s House of Representatives approved a civil union bill which will grant legal rights to same-sex couples after many years of battling for LGBT rights. The Pacto de Union Civil, or PUC, establishes a new legal status for couples that live together and are in committed relationships, regardless of their gender, orientation or gender identity.
The bill, which does not grant full marriage rights, instead recognizes same-sex unions as being legally backed and recognized under Chilean law. Despite growing opposition from mainly religious leaders and organizations, the PUC marks an important step forward in the fight for total equality for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people of Chile.
The bill comes just three years after the country passed a hate crime and anti-discrimination law, which protects individuals harmed on the basis of sexual orientation, gender expression or identity. The law was approved following the brutal murder of a man named Daniel Zamudio, a young gay man who was savagely beaten and left to die with swastikas carved into his body.
Further, the country has also taken positive steps towards supporting its LGBT community by sponsoring the recent UN Human Rights Council resolution, which is aimed at eradicating violence and discrimination based sexual orientation and gender identity on a global scale.
Sign the petition to commend Chile for supporting same-sex unions and respecting the relationships of its LGBT population.
Dear President Bachelet,
I am overwhelmed with joy since finding out that Chile will now recognize same-sex unions amongst its LGBT population. After years of fighting for equality, this positive step forward is crucial to letting the country’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender inhabitants know that their relationships matter and that their presence will not be ignored.
As the rest of the world continues to discriminate, violate, assault, murder and belittle LGBT people, Chile’s support is undeniably a vibrant step in a favorable direction. LGBT rights are human rights, and LGBT populations across the globe deserve to be treated with respect and their relationships merit legal validation.
Thank you, wholeheartedly, for your efforts, and I applaud your decision to acknowledge civil unions and protect the livelihoods of your country’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender population.
