Target: Texas House Member Representative Dan Flynn
Goal: Don’t allow teachers to use deadly force against students.
Texas is a state very passionate about firearms, allowing people to carry them even in classrooms. However, a new bill proposed Rep. Dan Flynn would allow teachers the right to use deadly force against students at school.
This bill, also known as the Teacher’s Protection Act would allow teachers to use deadly force in classrooms, on school buses, or at an event sponsored by the school, as long as it is in order to defend themselves or other students. The teachers would also be granted civil immunity and would not be responsible for the injury or death of a student.
There have already been too many school shootings and murdered students in the last few years. Granting teachers permission to take action with the promise of civil immunity can lead to the unnecessary deaths of people on school campuses. It may also encourage more teachers to bring firearms to class, where these weapons may end up in the wrong hands.
In wake of all the race issues currently happening around the country, this new bill could also pose a problem for students of color. Many are concerned that because students of color normally face higher amounts of disciplinary actions, they will be subject to unnecessary gun violence if this bill is passed.
Guns do not belong in schools. There is too high of a risk that an accident may occur or a teacher reacts carelessly and students could be killed. Please join us in making sure that the Teacher Protections Act allowing school officials to use deadly force on campus is not passed.
Dear Representative Flynn,
Gun violence is a growing problem in America. Despite popular belief, when the number of guns increase in society, so does the amount of crime. It is already outstanding that teachers in Texas are allowed to carry firearms with them on school campuses. Guns on campus can lead to many accidents and even deaths.
Passing the Teachers Protection Act and allowing the use of deadly force against a student would only make campuses more dangerous. While this protection is intended to defend teachers and students, passing this law can lead teachers to wrongfully persecute and kill students.
Introducing this law into schools leaves too much room for accidents and wrongful persecution. Please help protect the students of Texas by making sure this bill does not become law.
