Target: Mayor of Beijing, Wang Anshun
Goal: Commit to clean air in the city of Beijing.
Recently, the mayor of Beijing, Wang Anshun, told state media that his city was “unlivable” because of its noxious levels of air pollution. In the city it isn’t uncommon for citizens to travel around with masks because of the toxic levels of smog and other pollutants in the air. The mayor has stated that regulations have been made to improve air quality, but at the present time Beijing is simply not livable. This is severely distressing, as the pollutants that exist in Beijing and the rest of China impact the air quality of other countries. Tell Mayor Wang Anshun to ensure that Beijing adheres to these new regulations that are meant to keep the air clean.
With a plethora of news articles claiming that China does not comply with environmental regulations, Beijing has become the center of air pollution. With factories pumping out plumes of smoke and other toxins into the atmosphere it shouldn’t be a surprise to know that many of Beijing’s citizens suffer from respiratory problems. Even tourists have complained about the horrible air quality and tourism dropped by 10 percent in 2014. The city itself has closed down 392 companies and removed 476,000 vehicles from the roads to help alleviate pollution. But along with its pollution problem, Beijing has also experienced a rise in population.
Clean air is crucial to having a healthy life. Pollution and other toxins entering our lungs cause asthma and lung cancer, among other respiratory problems. Beijing’s plan to reduce pollution has been in effect for 18 months, but it shows little progress. The city needs to get its act together if its citizens are going to live happy and productive lives. Please sign this petition and urge Mayor Wang Anshun to solve this problem as quickly as possible.
Dear Mayor Wang Anshun,
The people in Beijing are suffering from abnormally high levels of pollutants. These toxins exist in the city’s atmosphere because factories are pumping out these toxins and disregard whatever regulations exist to keep the air clean. You recently stated that Beijing is not a livable city, and as mayor of this city I can understand how shocking and depressing it was to give this speech.
I urge you to keep fighting this problem. Beijing’s air pollution is a massive issue, one that will take years to overcome. For the health of your citizens, I implore you to be strict on factories and other industries that produce pollutants. If these industries aren’t regulated it will spell doom for the future of Beijing.
