Target: Don Iveson, Mayor of Edmonton
Goal: Praise efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions and reduce energy consumption.
A plan to cut fossil fuel use in favor of renewable energy sources has been proposed by the city of Edmonton, Canada. The plan, which has been in the works since 2012, is made up of 11 actions designed to make the city more environmentally friendly. Most notably, the city will aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 35 percent from 2005 levels by 2035.
The plan includes reducing energy consumption by 25 percent by introducing financial incentives for homeowners who switch to more energy-efficient appliances or purchase electric cars. It suggests increased reliance on renewable energy sources as well as public transit systems, which will also receive a financial boost under the plan. Finally, a committee would be formed to ensure the plan stays on track, unlike in the city’s previous goal of cutting greenhouse emissions 20 percent below 1990 levels by 2008.
Climate change, or global warming, poses an immediate threat to our environment. It is causing noticeable changes to the natural landscape, contributing to rising sea levels, glacial melting, and changes in weather patterns. Temperature changes related to global warming are suspected to be behind many changes in the ocean, including mass deaths of fish and seabirds as well as a surge in jellyfish populations.
The plan would not only help combat climate change, but would save the city billions of dollars. While it would require an initial $100 million investment, over $2.5 billion could be saved in the following years from energy bills alone. According to environmental policy program manager Jim Andrais, an additional billion dollars could be saved when the social costs of climate change are considered.
Rather than wait for Canada’s federal government to implement changes, Edmonton is taking the initiative to improve environmental conditions. The move will not only benefit the city, but much of the surrounding environment. Sign the petition below to applaud efforts to make Edmonton more environmentally friendly.
Dear Mayor Don Iveson,
A plan has been drafted to improve Edmonton’s environmental policy. It would see greenhouse gas emissions as well as energy consumption reduced, and provide financial incentives to homeowners and businesses who make a transition to using more renewable energy.
Not only will the plan benefit Edmonton, but it will serve as a model for other cities to follow. We, the undersigned, praise your efforts to take action on climate change by creating a renewable energy plan.
