Demand Justice for Unarmed Teen Shot and Killed by Police

Target: District Attorney Mitchell Morrissey

Goal: Investigate alleged police brutality and mishandling in the fatal shooting of unarmed teenager Jessica Hernandez.

Recently police officers in Denver, Co., shot and killed Jessica Hernandez while she was driving a car containing four other young passengers. The other passengers in the car were not injured, but this arguably reckless use of lethal force could have resulted in not just one but five teens shot and killed by police. Witnesses report hearing gunshots and seeing officers drag Jessica’s lifeless body out of the car, then handcuffing and searching her rather than calling for medical attention.

Police say there was a report of a suspicious car, and when they ran the plates on the vehicle it allegedly came up as stolen. They claim that as they approached the vehicle, the driver struck an officer in the leg, at which point the police opened fire on the car.

Small protests have already been arranged to demand that District Attorney Morrissey conduct an extensive and transparent investigation into the incident. However, Think Progress reported that Denver Police Chief Robert White has already stated, “I think the investigation will show that the officers’ actions were correct…” White also said that it has yet to be determined whether Hernandez intentionally hit the officer with the car.

The number of unarmed people we’ve seen fatally shot in the past year by police who walk away with no charges has become ridiculously high. By signing the petition below, you can help ensure those sworn “to protect and to serve” are held accountable so we can see a reduction in unnecessary deaths like Jessica’s.

Dear District Attorney Morrissey,

Police officers in Denver, Co., shot and killed Jessica Hernandez while she was driving a car containing four other young passengers. This use of lethal force on an unarmed teenager should not have been the only option for police officers to handle this situation, as they are supposed to de-escalate it, not escalate it. This reckless decision making could have resulted in not just one, but five dead teenage bodies.

This brash decision making only continued when Jessica’s lifeless body was allegedly dragged out of the car, then handcuffed and searched by police rather than them calling for medical attention after shooting her.  How many unarmed civilians need to be shot, injured, and even killed before something is done and someone is held accountable?

I am urging you to take action on an extensive and transparent investigation into this death in order to bring justice against the incessant police brutality we have recently seen.

Demand justice? She was armed with a stolen vehicle that she used to try to run over the officers. Justice WAS served.
