Target: Oklahoma State Representative Sally Kern
Goal: Halt effort to legalize various forms of discrimination against LGBT people.
It could soon be legal in Oklahoma for private businesses to discriminate against members of the LBGT community if legislation proposed by Representative Sally Kern becomes law. This, along with other bills introduced by Representative Kern that Oklahoma’s legislature will consider, would be a blatant violation of civil rights. Demand that Representative Kern remove her proposals from consideration so that they never get the chance to become law.
Oklahoma State Representative Sally Kern has been on a crusade against the LGBT community ever since she was sworn into office ten years ago. That effort continues this legislative year with three individual bills she has introduced for consideration. One, House Bill 1599, would make it illegal for public servants to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples. A second, House Bill 1598, would allow parents to enroll their gay children in conversion therapy to become straight, a “treatment” that California and New Jersey have already outlawed and that was partly responsible for a tragic recent suicide of transgender teen Leelah Alcorn. The most shameless bill Representative Kern has introduced, however, is House Bill 1597, which would give businesses the protected right to deny accommodations, services, and goods to members of the LGBT community because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Representative Kern doesn’t even have the decency to try to mask her motives with these bills, and with Republican supermajorities in both the Oklahoma House and Senate, there is justified cause for concern. Sign the petition below to demand that Representative Kern abandon her hateful bills at once.
Dear Representative Kern,
I am writing you today regarding the slew of bills you have introduced into the Oklahoma House for consideration this year. House bills 1597, 1598, and 1599 are shamelessly discriminatory and do not deserve to ever even see the light of day.
The fact that an elected representative would feel that it was at all appropriate to introduce legislation that is so blatantly against the Constitution is mind-boggling. Businesses discriminating against a minority is clearly in violation of civil rights. Disallowing public servants from issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples is a blatant violation of the rights granted to same-sex couples by your state. Allowing parents to endanger the health and wellbeing of their children by sending them to “conversion therapy,” a practice that the psychological establishment has denounced, California and New Jersey has outlawed, and that many would consider child abuse, is an obvious violation of those children’s rights.
I would hope elected representatives would hold themselves to a higher standard than this, but I suppose I should not expect anything less from someone who once said that homosexuality is more dangerous that terrorism. That does not mean, however, that I have to take it sitting down. I demand that you scrap your three bills immediately.
