Target: Prime Minister of Australia Tony Abbott
Goal: Don’t relinquish commitment to protect several endangered species of sharks.
Australian officials are now saying they will not do their part in protecting the waters that endangered sharks swim through regularly. The global populations of all species of sharks have been dwindling in recent decades, and the Australian government recently committed to protecting two species of hammerhead sharks and three species of thresher sharks that migrate through their oceans. These species were among many (such as several species of whales and fish) declared endangered and in need of protection.
The Australian government does not want to hurt their commercial fishermen who often fish in the waters of these migratory animals and catch them in their nets quite frequently. By supporting the people who kill these endangered animals, Australia has openly stated that they do not care about conservation, and that money and politics are worth more to them than living creatures. This cannot be allowed to happen, especially when the commitment was made months ago, and the desire to go back on their decision is only coming now when they were supposed to begin conservation efforts in the near future.
Besides the blatant disregard for the livelihood of multiple species, Australian officials cannot simply back out of the international obligations they made. The sharks they agreed to protect migrate through the waters of many countries, and Australia has not objected to others’ protection of the animals. Please sign this petition and tell them that they cannot simply watch while other countries try to conserve our sharks. They must participate as well.
Dear Prime Minister,
Recently, your government made a commitment to protect and conserve several species of hammerhead and thresher sharks, and yet you are now attempting to put a halt to these efforts that were supposed to begin in the near future. This cannot be allowed to happen. These sharks migrate through your country’s oceans, and the commercial fishermen you are trying not to penalize slaughter them regularly. To preserve a migratory species, an effort must be made by every country they pass by. You made a commitment to your country and to the world, and to back out of it now would be an appalling act of cowardice.
Your country made an international commitment to help these animals. By attempting to back out of the agreement, you are flagrantly supporting their demise instead of their conservation. You cannot ignore the plight of animals in your area. Please do not back out.
