Pass Wilderness Expansion Plan

Target: John A. Boehner, U.S. Speaker of the House

Goal: Pass the wilderness expansion plan that was proposed by President Obama.

Recently, President Obama made a proposal to set aside the majority of the wilderness area in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Currently, around seven million acres of Alaska’s national wildlife refuge are set and managed as wilderness, and this new plan would protect an additional 12.3 million acres. This proposal advocates the necessity to preserve the rich wildlife in Alaska, and the successful passage of this plan is necessary to achieve that goal.

A little more than 50% of Alaska is wilderness area, making it the state with the most acreage of wilderness. Thus, Alaska has a great expanse of area for wildlife, such as caribou, polar bears, and numerous species of birds and fish, to thrive in. However, this richly inhabited area has been exploited for fossil fuel resources for a considerable amount of time, and in effect has sustained some damages.

The proposal may halt the quest to explore for potentially oil-rich coastal plains in this area, which has been a long debated struggle between land conservationists and advocates of energy exploration. To this effect, the proposal by the president to expand the wilderness area was met with much resistance by top state-elected officials. If the plan is successfully passed in Congress, it would be the largest area set aside since the Wilderness Act was passed in the 1960’s.

The conservation of our wilderness is vital to preserve the rich wildlife that inhabits it, and this proposal by President Obama aims to help achieve this goal. Given that Alaska is especially highly impacted by the effects of climate change, the conservation in this area needs to be increased. Please sign this petition below to urge the U.S. Congress to approve of this plan to further the conservation efforts in Alaska.

Dear Speaker Boehner,

Climate change and destructive effects from fossil fuel exploration have been taking a toll on numerous areas of the United States, and Alaska is no exception. The wilderness area of Alaska takes up more than half of the state, and the diverse wildlife that inhabit the area has been negatively impacted by encroachment. Animals such as caribou, polar bears, and numerous species of birds and fish inhabit this area in great numbers, and their survival will be positively impacted with the passage of this plan.

Please allow the wilderness expansion proposal to pass in Congress to further the conservation efforts in Alaska. Many individuals are working hard to conserve the welfare of the Alaskan wildlife, and this plan will positively reinforce the efforts of the conservationists.
