Don’t Appoint Anti-Immigration Senator to Key Immigration Role

Target: Mitch McConnell, Senate Majority Leader

Goal: Protect the rights of immigrants by preventing a biased senator’s appointment to an important immigration position.

A U.S. senator with a strong anti-immigration background is about to be appointed to chair of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on immigration. Placing someone with such a strong anti-immigrant bias in this important position can hurt millions of immigrants and their families and make immigration much more difficult that it already is. Please join us in demanding that someone more moderate will be appointed to this important position so that immigrants to the U.S. will get the fair treatment they deserve.

Senator Jeff Sessions (R-AL) will be the new chairman of the immigration subcommittee, an incredibly troubling fact as Sessions is known for his anti-immigration views. Many people have applauded President Barack Obama for his recent efforts to assist undocumented immigrants, and many Americans prefer progressive immigration policies that do not intentionally make it difficult to immigrate. Senator Sessions recently suggested nine measures that would make life harder and more complicated for immigrants, including “canceling federal funds to sanctuary cities” and “closing asylum and refugee loopholes.” In the past, Sessions also claimed that letting too many immigrants into the U.S. could “create cultural problems.”

A country that prides itself on allowing people from all backgrounds to access and realize opportunities cannot have someone like Sessions leading its immigration policies. The U.S. needs people who understand the importance and complexity of immigration and who can face it without prejudice to lead policies on this issue. Sessions’ appointment will only worsen the situation for  immigrants who have already given up so much just to get to this country. Demand that someone less biased be appointed to this important post by signing the petition below.

Dear Senator McConnell,

It was recently announced that Senator Jeff Sessions (R) will become the chair of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on immigration. Sessions is known for his anti-immigration stance, and could do a lot of damage in his new role. He has worked before to try and complicate the lives of immigrants and make it harder for them to obtain a legal status. This is not what the U.S. needs and would only serve to intimidate immigrant families and make their lives harder. I believe that he is the wrong person for this position and I demand that someone else who is less biased on the issue be appointed as the subcommittee chair.

The U.S. was founded on immigrants’ ideas, persistence, and hard work, and immigrants remain a central part of the country’s prosperity today. Senator Sessions would use his position as chair to promote legislation that would harm immigrants and the U.S. as a whole. I ask that you prevent this from happening and ensure that a more moderate legislator is appointed as chair of the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on immigration.
