Target: Barbara Boxer, ranking member of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works
Goal: Call a congressional hearing regarding the health impacts of manipulating the weather with aerosolized metals.
Geoengineering is a subject that has been largely ignored by the mainstream media, purposefully ridiculed as the stuff of conspiracy theories, and sometimes categorized as too esoteric to even discuss. Nevertheless, the U.S. Air Force and Navy have been experimenting for decades with high-altitude spraying of various heavy metals to precipitate clouds without public consent. We need an honest congressional hearing regarding the extent of past and future geoengineering experiments and a health impact review now.
Solar radiation management, the practice of adding particulates to the atmosphere to reflect more sunlight back into space, is an untestable, planet-wide solution to a problem caused by the same liberal use of the common atmosphere, in that case as a repository for burnt carbon. Known to politicians and policymakers as “Plan B,” geoengineering is seen as a last resort response to a rapidly warming climate. Instead of facilitating the decrease of fossil fuel consumption, which is politically difficult, our representatives are lazily considering propagating this technological fix. Despite the good intentions of cooling the atmosphere, the toxic metals eventually fall into our soil, water, and surface air where they are ingested by uninformed populations.
Like genetically modified crops, geoengineering experts have avoided the meddling of publicly-mandated regulation or oversight by touting the benefits and withholding the dangers. There is no genuine investigation about the effects such a widespread experiment will have on the health of individuals and the environment. Our objecting to being unwilling guinea pigs is overdue. Sign the petition below to call on Senator Boxer to convene a congressional hearing on geoengineering.
Dear Senator Boxer,
As you are probably aware, many programs are being employed across the world that involve seeding the atmosphere with aerosol sulphate particles and other heavy metals to produce clouds and reflect sunlight.
As your last senatorial term comes to an end, I ask you to bring up this issue that seems to be taboo in the halls of Congress. This practice is undoubtedly a health hazard and yet continues with no oversight.
I write to you in the hopes that you might spur the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works and the Subcommittee on Superfund, Toxics, and Envrionmental Health to convene a hearing to submit to the congressional records the concerns of health professionals as well as the justifications by US Air Force and Navy representatives on the subject of aerosol geoengineering.
