Target: Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf
Goal: Applaud the appointment of a transgender woman to the position of Physician General
A transgender woman has just been appointed as Physician General in the state of Pennsylvania by the state’s governor, Tom Wolf. Dr. Rachel Levine is now the first transgender person in the country to be appointed to this position by a state government. This is a great step for the transgender community, which still faces severe discrimination and under-representation in government–and in general–in the U.S.
A Physician General directly advises both the governor and the state secretary of the Department of Health on all medical topics and matters of public health. Having a trans woman in this position will be a huge benefit for other trans people in the state who have to struggle with uneducated doctors and bigoted insurance companies that make these oppressed individuals jump through hoops just to get the hormones and other treatments that they need. Dr. Levine could help the process of implementing laws and policies that will make life much easier for trans people in the state.
By signing this petition, you’ll thank Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf for appointing a trans woman to the role of Physician General. It’s still unfortunately rare for politicians in the U.S. to be progressive and open minded enough to see past stereotypes and national bigotry to a trans person’s qualifications and general humanity. It’s important that we show our support for putting trans people into positions of power and influence.
Dear Governor Wolf,
You recently appointed Dr. Rachel Levine, a transgender woman, to the position of Pennsylvania state Physician General. This is the first time in U.S. history that a trans woman has been appointed to this role by a state government. It’s a huge step for transgender rights and representation, as Dr. Levine can be a role model to other trans people while advising you on the best way to help these oppressed individuals in terms of health care.
Transgender people in the U.S. face a lot of discrimination in the workplace, even in the government, and have few protections from bigotry. Many people still carry a lot of hatred for and ignorance about trans people, and part of this is because they have so little representation. There’s also a lot of problems with doctors and insurance companies denying trans people necessary health care.
All of these problems can be addressed now that you’ve appointed a trans woman as the Pennsylvania Physician General. I wanted to reach out to give you my thanks for this history-making act. With one appointment, you’ve given hope to all of the transgender people in your state. You’ve let them know that they can achieve greatness and can look forward to a better health care system. Thank you for standing up for the oppressed.
