Target: New Mexico’s Governor Susana Martinez
Goal: Ban cruel and unnecessary animal killing contests in New Mexico.
Many different animal species are being cruelly killed in New Mexico as a result of various animal killing contests. These contests are responsible for the needless slaughter of foxes, prairie dogs, bobcats, snakes, badgers, skunks, coyotes, and many other animals. Unfortunately, these type of events are legal in all states but California. However, the problem in New Mexico has become extreme, as it now holds the title as the state with the highest number of killing contests each year.
These inhumane killing contests exceed any viable reasons for hunting while also giving ethical hunters an undeserving reputation. Individuals participate for the sport, killing as many animals as possible to compete for a prize. Animals are cruelly murdered for no particular purpose other than to provide entertainment for heartless people.
While these people carelessly murder numerous animals, they are contributing to the destruction of New Mexico’s unique ecosystem. Many threatened species depend on the old burrows of prairie dog towns to survive. But with many prairie dogs being targeted in these contests, their range has shrunk and many species that depended on their burrows for protection now begin to disappear from these areas as well.
However, this is only one example of the many ways the environment is effected when one species is targeted. New Mexico’s contestants are responsible for the deaths of many different animals, having a huge negative impact. To preserve New Mexico’s environment, it is important to end these senseless killings.
By signing this petition below, you will be asking the government of New Mexico to ban killing contests. With an end to these contests, New Mexico’s environment can begin to a recover and the biodiversity of its ecosystem can be maintained. No animal deserves to be murdered for such a superfluous reason. Please help to ensure that all animals are protected and that these vicious contests will cease to exist.
Dear Governor Martinez,
New Mexico has earned the title of having the highest number of killing contests in the United States. Countless coyotes, bobcats, prairie dogs, skunks, snakes, and other species are targeted each year for sport. These is no reason that these animals are killed other than to entertain heartless humans.
The lack of hunting regulations and limitations inflates the problem further. These killing rampages have no end and these contestants could compete until New Mexico’s ecosystem is destroyed. These killing contests are not only cruel and pointless, but have a severe effect on the environment. To assure the biodiversity of New Mexico is maintained, action needs to be taken.
I urge you to ban killing contests in New Mexico. There is no purpose for this inhumane, vicious murder in New Mexico or any state. It is destructive and unnecessary and needs to be banned before it is too late. Please help to preserve New Mexico’s ecosystem and protect all wildlife living in it by ending these inhumane killing contests.
