Stop Poisoning Stray Dogs

Target: Minister of Health of the Russian Federation, Veronica Skvortsova

Goal: Stop the culling of stray dogs using poisoned meat

Russian “dog hunters” who kill dogs for sport have been poisoning stray dogs after organizing the killing over the Internet. The nationwide killing has resulted in citizens finding dead dogs in various cities, some of them strays and others belonging to families.

The hunters use an anti-tuberculosis drug called Isoniazid to poison the dogs through their meat. By doing this, even humans can be at risk and parents have been warned to keep an eye on small children who may pick up the contaminated meat. The “dog hunters” argue that they are doing a service for the city by protecting the public from strays.

“We are not targeting family pets. We simply want to make our city a safer place by cleaning it out from stray dogs,” says an individual known as Gennady.

The bodies of poisoned dogs are piling up and a news agency reported seeing a dog dying in a courtyard in the Ural Mountain city of Nizhny Tagil. A resident ran for help when they saw the dog start to convulse violently.

Animal control is severely lacking in the areas that are subject to the poisonings. While these “dog hunters” think that they are doing a service to their city, this is not the case. They are putting families and their pets in danger and need to let the Ministry of Health step up and take care of stray dogs. Please sign the petition below to urge the Minister of the Ministry of Health to increase their efforts to keep strays off the streets.

Dear Minister Skvortsova,

The recent poisoning of dogs, both strays and family-owned, is very troubling. “Dog hunters” who perform the mass killings believe that they are doing their cities a public service, when they are actually putting both human and dog lives at risk.

Using an anti-tuberculosis drug called Isoniazid, these “dog hunters” are subjecting canines to a cruel death that leaves them convulsing in the streets or in front of their own confused families. This cannot and should not continue and animals need to be better handled by the Ministry of Health.

Please end these mass killings by taking an active role in controlling stray animals in Russia’s cities. By controlling stray animals, “dog hunters” will hopefully no longer see a need to eradicate stray animals in such a cruel manner.
