Target: Mexico’s Secretary of Agriculture Enrique Martínez y Martínez
Goal: Praise gill net fishing ban in the Sea of Cortez and encourage the federal government’s plans to save the critically endangered vaquita porpoise.
With their population recently dropping below 100, the vaquita porpoise is a rare species on the verge of extinction. The presence of gill net fishing in its habitat area has been largely responsible for the drastic decline in its population. While many fishermen use gill nets in hopes of catching totoaba, many vaquita porpoises end up in their nets where they are injured or killed.
Because only a few fertile female porpoises remain, action to save this beautiful creature has become quite urgent. With tireless efforts, including previous ForceChange petitions, the future of this unique animal seems bright. Mexican authorities recently proposed a plan to ban gill net fishing in the Sea of Cortez and hopefully rebuild the vaquita porpoise’s population.
This $37 million initiative would protect most of the range the vaquita porpoise occupies while also enforcing the ban on gill net fishing in these areas. The ban would be effective for at least two years and also states that fishermen will be compensated for not fishing with gill nets.
This plan has been established at such a crucial time. Please take a moment to thank Mexico’s Agriculture and Fisheries Department for developing this plan and encourage it to execute the ban as soon as possible. Because of their efforts, help is on the way for this unique creature.
Dear Secretary Martinez,
The vaquita porpoise is a critically endangered species that has been threatened by the use of gill net fishing. Because of these careless fishing methods, the porpoise’s population has been reduced to less than 100.
It is important that this creature receives the help that it needs before it becomes extinct. The recent proposal announced by the Secretariat of Agriculture and Fisheries to ban the use of gill nets in efforts to save the vaquita porpoise is a huge step in ensuring the porpoise’s survival. We would like to thank you and your team for developing this life-saving plan. This tremendous effort could help save this species from extinction.
Thank you again for all your efforts in protecting this magnificent creature. We hope that your plan will become effective quickly so that we can help rebuild the population of this species before its too late.
