Target: West Hollywood Mayor John D’Amico
Goal: Thank West Hollywood for creating gender-neutral restrooms.
All single-occupancy restrooms in West Hollywood are now gender neutral thanks to the city council. This will make it much less difficult or uncomfortable for transgender individuals to use public restrooms in the city. The city council should be praised for this progressive and honorable action.
All businesses in West Hollywood have 60 days to remove the gender signs from their single-occupancy restrooms as part of the new law. Transgender individuals are very abundant in the liberal city of Los Angeles, and many of them have experienced harassment when using public restrooms. A recent poll showed that in Washington D.C., 70 percent of transgender people have been verbally harassed in a public bathroom, 18 percent had been denied access, and 10 percent had been physically abused.
This law only effects single-stall bathrooms, but it will still be effective in ensuring that there are some restrooms that transgender individuals can use comfortably without fear or harassment. If businesses do not comply, they will be fined.
This development represents a positive influence for the rest of the nation, which is facing increased demand for gender neutral bathrooms. The West Hollywood City Council could provide solutions and encourage other cities to tackle this issue.
Please sign the petition below to thank the City Council of West Hollywood for taking the initiative to create gender- neutral bathrooms.
Dear Mayor D’Amico,
Thank you for your recent law to convert all single-occupancy restrooms in Hollywood to gender-neutral facilities. The demand for gender-neutral restrooms is an issue across the country and your efforts to address this issue are an appreciated.
Transgender people often face discrimination when using restrooms. A recent poll showed that in Washington D.C., 70 percent of transgender people have been verbally harassed in a public bathroom, 18 percent had been denied access, and 10 percent had been physically abused. Much like D.C., West Hollywood has a large transgender population, and it will greatly benefit from this new law.
While this is only a small step in providing comfort and safety to transgender people, it will hopefully influence other cities to take similar actions and initiate a trend of transgender protection strategies.
Thank you again for these efforts and we encourage you to continue aiding transgender people in the future.
