Ban the Sale of Tobacco Products

Target: Walgreens CEO Gregory Wasson

Goal: Ban tobacco products from being sold at all Walgreens locations

Walgreens has continued to sell dangerous, toxic tobacco products despite positive examples from other stores. CVS made a bold move last year by banning tobacco sales at all of their locations. Many hoped their daring efforts would set an example for other pharmacies nationwide. Unfortunately Walgreens, the #1 drug store chain in the U.S., has not followed in their footsteps.

CVS’s ban was intended to shift the focus towards healthy living and the health care services that they provide. By banning tobacco products, they proved that there is no room for profiting off of harmful substances in a respectable health care establishment.

Many believed that Walgreens would follow CVS’s decision. Unfortunately, a statement released by a Walgreen’s spokesperson announced that they would continue to sell tobacco products in their stores. This refusal is a reflection of their greed and desire for profit over the public’s well being.

After CVS’s decision to halt tobacco sales, their sales actually increased. There is no reason that Walgreens should not follow their example. Please help urge the CEO of Walgreens to ban the sale of tobacco products in their stores. By doing so, it would help divert people from buying cigarettes and perhaps even persuade them to quit. Nearly 20 percent of deaths in America are tobacco related. Less tobacco products would help lower this number, benefit the environment and the health of everyone.

Dear Mr. Wasson,

As the CEO of Walgreens, the leading drug store chain in the nation, the decisions regarding your company effect society as a whole. An important matter your company has influence over is the huge tobacco problem in the U.S. Currently, about 20 percent of all deaths in America are tobacco related.

CVS has made an important decision to ban tobacco sales in all of their stores. I urge you to follow their lead and also remove tobacco products from your stores. It would make a huge statement to the entire nation if the leading pharmacy company banned tobacco products. Banning tobacco products in your stores would make them less accessible to the public and possibly divert some from using these products altogether.

Please help stop the horrible consequences of tobacco products and ban them in all of your stores. By doing so, you will be helping the environment and the health of American’s nationwide.
