Target: Greg Hunt, Australian Minister for the Environment
Goal: Revoke the approval of Australia’s largest coal mine.
A massive coal mine in Australia was approved without considering all the environmental impacts. The coal from this destructive mining operation will emit dangerous levels of greenhouse gases into our atmosphere. The environmental assessment failed to include the impact of carbon emissions produced by burning coal. The time to act against this coal mine is now. Take action by demanding that the Australian Minister for the Environment withdraw the approval of this expensive and dirty mining project.
Known as the Carmichael coal mine, this project will become Australia’s largest coal mine with six open pits and five underground mines. India’s Adani Group is the company behind the mine. The coal will be transported from Australia to India to burn for energy. Twenty thousand hectares of native bushland will be destroyed for the mine’s operation. An exportation terminal will be built right through the Great Barrier Reef. Rail transportation would have to be built through fertile farmland.
The Australian Minister for the Environment has already approved this project. The mine will destroy Australia’s land and natural resources. Adani Group has caused great environmental damage in the past and has been proven guilty of illegal exportation and bribery. The company plans to export 60 million tons of coal a year from the Carmichael site. This company should not be trusted to protect and uphold Australia’s environment.
By signing this petition, you are urging the Australian Minister for the Environment to revoke his approval of the Carmichael mine. The environmental assessment should consider the atmospheric impacts of burning Carmichael coal. Australia’s land, wildlife, and natural resources are threatened by this mine. The earth’s air quality will suffer. Demand that Australia’s Minister for the Environment protect and fight for environmental integrity.
Dear Minister Hunt,
The Carmichael coal mine will negatively impact Australia. You must revoke your approval of this mine because the environmental assessment is flawed. The mine’s coal will be burned and contribute to the Earth’s increasing greenhouse gas emissions. These emission impacts must be evaluated. Please take action to protect Earth’s air quality.
Not only will air be affected but also land, water, and wildlife. Twenty thousand hectares will be destroyed for mining operations. A railroad will invade fertile farmland and the busy sea port will contaminate the coveted waters that include the Great Barrier Reef. The mine’s operation is in the hands of the Adani Group, which has been found guilty of environmental damage and illegal activity. It is therefore obvious that the Carmichael coal mine is bad news for Australia.
I urge you to reevaluate your decision on the Carmichael coal mine. Please conduct an adequate environmental impact that includes all the impacts of the mine. Our future lies in renewables. The burning coal produced at Carmichael will only increase carbon emissions. Reconsider the Carmichael coal mine for the benefit of Australia’s natural resources and the world’s air quality.
