Target: Christina Brown, Associated Students Executive Director at San Diego State University
Goal: Comply with transgender student’s request to have curtains installed in gym showers to mitigate harassment.
A. T. Furuya, a transmasculine graduate student at San Diego State University, requested that curtains be installed in the school’s gym locker rooms after he was allegedly harassed by men in the showers for being trans. The university has not yet installed the curtains, and Furuya continues to be harassed. Demand that the school take the harassment of its transgender students seriously and immediately install shower curtains in locker rooms.
Furuya notified campus officials about the harassment he experienced in the men’s locker room for being transgender, and requested that shower curtains be put up so that he could shower after a workout in peace. Associated Students Executive Director Christina Brown reportedly told Furuya that she would follow up on the shower curtains. Months have passed, however, and the curtains are still not in place, and Furuya continues to be harassed. Indeed, in the most recent incident, gym staff asked Furuya to leave after he was threatened with violence from another man in the locker room for having “titties,” instead of asking the man who made the threats to leave. When he and a sympathetic witness asked gym staff to call security to remove the harasser, their request was refused.
San Diego State University touts its campus as trans-inclusive but, clearly, creating a safe space for its trans students is not a high priority. Sign the petition below to demand that the university install shower curtains in its gym’s locker rooms.
Dear Ms. Brown,
I am writing you today about the request filed by your student A. T. Furuya to install shower curtains in your school’s gym locker rooms that has not been followed through by your university. Your school is clearly not a safe space for trans students, and the lethargy with which it has addressed their concerns is appalling.
Furuya informed you months ago about how he was not comfortable in the gym and its locker rooms, saying that they were inaccessible to trans students due to hostility from other gym-goers. He also told you exactly what could be done to mitigate that problem: put up shower curtains so he, and other trans students, could get fresh after a workout more privately. Your school has as of yet, however, refused to heed Furuya’s honest advice. In the meantime, Furuya has continued to be harassed, and was even threatened with violence, just for being a trans man in the men’s locker room. It is safe to assume that he is not the only one who has been harassed for their gender either.
San Diego State has an obligation to address the concerns of its students and do everything in its power to make the campus a safe space for them. That includes its transgender students. I demand that you follow Furuya’s suggestion and immediately install shower curtains in all of the university’s gym locker rooms.
