Target: India Prime Minister Narendra Modi
Goal: Abandon plans to open treatment centers to turn gay people “normal.”
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi caused a huge outrage over his plans to make gay people in the state of Goa “normal.” A representative of the Prime Minister’s party said that the government was planning on opening centers to treat all of the gay people in their region.
The Goa state government is planning to open up facilities to train and give gay people medicine to cure them of their homosexuality. According to The Guardian, the government wants to have the centers run like Alcoholics Anonymous centers with meetings and discussions. Gay rights groups expressed that they believe the statements that the prime minister made are offensive and ignorant.
In 2009, homosexuality was seen as legal because the Dehli high court ruled that banning it was a clear violation of fundamental rights. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court forced a ban on gays in 2013, saying that judges should not have had the power to change the law. Specifically, Goa is known as the party state in India and draws in thousands of tourists each year. Goa is known for being more gay-friendly than any other place in India.
Please sign this petition to tell Prime Minister Narenda Modi and his government to leave gay people in Goa alone.
Dear Prime Minister Narendra Modi,
You made a statement that you wanted to “cure” the gay population in the state of Goa. You have called the government in Goa to open facilities that mimic Alcoholics Anonymous in order to cure them of their homosexuality.
I want to inform you that a sexual orientation is not a disease that needs to be cured. A homosexual person does not need to be treated for anything. Your proposal of wanting to train them and give them medicine makes completely no sense. You are promoting a dangerous practice that can make people feel ashamed of their sexual orientation. There is no reason for an entire government to attack innocent people because they do not agree with how they choose to live their lives.
Please take back your plans to try and make gay people “normal” and apologize to the thousands of people that you have offended with your statements. The gay people of Goa are fine the way they are and do not need to be forced to join your programs.
