Target: Nebraska Governor Pete Ricketts
Goal: Fire a member of the Nebraska Board of Education for allegedly running a racist and homophobic blog.
Pat McPherson, a member of the Nebraska Board of Education, has come under fire after it was revealed that he reportedly ran a conservative blog that repeatedly called President Obama a “half-breed” and mocked public schools for catering to transgender students, among other things. The governor of the state, Pete Ricketts, has condemned the comments but has not called for McPherson’s resignation. Demand that Governor Ricketts remove McPherson from the Board of Education immediately.
Unfortunately, the offensive remarks mentioned above are just the tip of the iceberg. The blog, titled Objective Conservative, also featured a tweet saying “Barack Obama is what happens when Affirmative Action and The Peter Principle have a baby;” shared Birther literature; condemned the government for “creating special classes for gays, lesbians, transgenders, cross-dressers, aka., queers and perverts;” and compared gay marriage to bestiality. McPherson claims that he did not author any of the controversial posts himself, saying that he had as many as seven different contributors posting on the blog at any time, but that does not absolve him of responsibility. As the founder and co-editor of the blog, McPherson should be held accountable for the material it contains, especially since it relates to his public office.
The fact that endorsing this kind of bigoted material should disqualify someone from having authority over a system of public education should be self-evident. Sign the petition below to demand that Governor Ricketts fire McPherson from the state Board of Education.
Dear Governor Ricketts,
I am writing you today regarding the scandal that has erupted surrounding Nebraska Board of Education member Pat McPherson and his blog, the Objective Conservative. Though you have already condemned the material included in the blog, that is not enough.
What is so alarming about this situation is that the content contained in McPherson’s blog relates directly to the job he has as a member of the Board of Education. By allegedly mocking transgender students, he shows his true colors. By reportedly throwing racist remarks at the President, he shows his true colors. By allegedly condemning gay people, he shows his true colors. Yes, there is the caveat that McPherson says he didn’t write any of the things himself, but on that point there is no evidence either way, and besides—regardless of whether or not he wrote them, he was still the editor and it was still his own blog. The material presented on it is his responsibility.
How can we trust McPherson to fairly and justly work on behalf of Nebraska’s public schools when we know that he, at the very least, sympathizes with bigots and racists? I demand that you immediately remove McPherson from Nebraska’s Board of Education.
