Target: Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com CEO
Goal: Cancel deal to produce series written and directed by alleged child molester Woody Allen.
Woody Allen’s adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow, came out last year with a public letter where she accused Allen of molesting her when she was a child. Now the acclaimed director is working on a project with Amazon, directing and writing a series to be available on Amazon Prime. It is completely unacceptable for Amazon to condone the actions of a child molester by working with him on a project like this. Please join us in demanding that Amazon take a stand against sexual violence and cancel the deal with Woody Allen immediately.
Allen adopted Dylan with his partner at the time, Mia Farrow, and had a biological child with her, Ronan Farrow. Both Mia and Ronan have spoken out about the alleged abuse, and criticized the media industry for ignoring Allen’s actions and celebrating his career despite his past. Woody Allen’s alleged abuse of his daughter became public in the early 1990’s, but his image was left untouched and he kept on directing popular movies that grossed millions of dollars.
Charges were never filed against Allen despite findings of probable cause by the state of Connecticut. Mia Farrow decided at the time that it would be too difficult for Dylan to go through the process. Allen was denied visitation rights, and Farrow decided that that was a sufficient solution. The story came back into the public’s attention in 2014, when Allen won a lifetime achievement award at the Golden Globes and Dylan Farrow posted her letter in the New York Times.
In her letter Dylan wrote, “For so long, Woody Allen’s acceptance silenced me. It felt like rebuke, like the awards and accolades were a way to tell me to shut up and go away. But the survivors of sexual abuse who have reached out to me–to support me and to share their fears of coming forward, of being called a liar, of being told their memories aren’t their memories–have given me a reason to not be silent, if only so others know that they don’t have to be silent either.” The media has been ignoring this tragedy for years and celebrating Allen’s work as if nothing ever happened. Please don’t further Dylan’s silencing, and don’t overlook Woody Allen’s awful history.
Dear Mr. Bezos,
I am writing to you regarding a recent project that Amazon is working on with Woody Allen. As you might know, Allen’s daughter, Dylan Farrow, accused him of molesting her when she was a child, a claim that was backed by both her mother and brother. Amazon managed to produce quality original content and raise important social issues in the show Transparent, so please don’t ruin that reputation by collaborating with a child molester. I ask that you immediately cancel the project with Woody Allen and avoid working with him in the future.
It is harmful to all survivors of sexual violence to see that a man who molested his own daughter can go on to have a successful career, while she has to live and deal with the trauma alone. By working with Allen you are essentially condoning his actions and sending the message that you are willing to overlook child abuse. Please take a stand against sexual violence and for survivors, and cut your ties with Allen immediately.
