Target: Bobby Jindal, Governor of Lousiana
Goal: Stop governor from speaking at a homophobic organization’s annual summit
Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal is planning to speak at an event hosted by a homophobic Catholic organization. A number of other speakers that had also been slated to speak have canceled their appearances in light of the organization’s philosophy, but Governor Jindal refuses to do the same. Urge the governor to cancel his speech.
Governor Bobby Jindal is one of a number of high-profile guests who are slated to speak at an annual summit hosted by Legatus, a Catholic organization dedicated to advocating for Catholic ideals in professional and business settings. The number of speakers used to be larger until it came to light that Legatus takes a hard line on homosexuality, insisting that it is “a selfish act that cannot fulfill the divinely ordained purpose of the reproductive powers” and that gay people must pursue corrective therapy that, it insists, research has shown to be “successful.” In response to these revelations, military veteran advocate and actor Gary Sinise canceled his planned speech at the conference, as did Fox News anchor Bret Baier, both citing the organization’s bigoted views as reasons for their change of heart. Governor Jindal, however, has unfortunately not responded in kind.
Organizations that are so blatantly regressive should not be implicitly endorsed by anyone, especially high-profile politicians. Sign the petition below to demand that Governor Jindal cancel his planned appearance at the Legatus annual summit.
Dear Governor Jindal,
I am writing regarding your scheduled appearance at Legatus’ 2015 Annual Summit. Many of your planned fellow speakers have already withdrawn from the event due to Legatus’ bigoted views, and I urge you to do the same.
Legatus is blatantly homophobic and pro-conversion therapy. The organization views gay people as abominations who are contrary to God, and insists that they pursue therapy to “correct” their orientations. This particular kind of therapy has repeatedly been denounced by the psychological establishment, and is one of the reasons that the rates of suicide in the LGBT youth community are so high. Indeed, the psychological establishment no longer even considers homosexuality a mental disorder at all. Legatus clearly relies more on ideology than established and impartial science in this area, and that has been enough to get such notable personalities as Gary Sinese and Bret Baier, both Catholics like yourself, to cancel their appearances at the organization’s event.
Apparently, both Sinese and Baier know where to draw the line when it comes to their faith and the lives of others—why don’t you? Take a stand against the bigotry Legatus endorses like they did. I demand that you follow in the footsteps of your esteemed colleagues and cancel your appearance at the Legatus summit.
