Target: Chief of Police John R. Barber, Ithaca Police Department
Goal: Urge the Ithaca police to compensate the Cady family for destroying their home during an investigation
A mother of two has been widowed and rendered homeless after police attempted to arrest her husband for evading a Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) conviction. After months of missing his court appearance, 150 officers from a dozen agencies spent over 60 hours breaking down the walls of the family home. In light of the completely overzealous application of a warrant for a DWI arrest, demand that the Ithaca Police Department contribute to the Cady family relief fund.
In August 2014, David Cady missed his court appearance regarding a DWI conviction. Consequently, a bench warrant was issued and, on December 30th, police arrived at his residence in Danby, New York with an arguably excessive response. Melissa Cady and her two children peacefully left the residence when requested by the police but the father refused and barricaded himself inside. The ensuing standoff required police to cordon off roughly 20 nearby homes, and enlist the help of six police departments, two college police agencies, the Ithaca Fire Department, three sheriff’s offices, the Ithaca S.W.A.T. team, and the Tompkins County Office of Emergency Management.
A single shot was heard from inside the house, leading the S.W.A.T. to break down the walls of the home to “restrict his movement” and fire tear gas canisters inside. After hours of no communication, police finally realized the suspect had died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Soon after the destructive standoff, Danby Code Enforcement condemned the property.
Now, Mrs. Cady and her two children are left homeless and fatherless all for a missed court appearance. Local Pastor Ed Enstine of Danby Federated Church has organized a fundraiser to help the Cady family get back on their feet. Tell the Ithaca Police Department to apologize for their ill-considered tactics by contributing to this fund.
Dear Police Chief Barber,
On December 30th, your police department was involved in a lengthy standoff in Danby, New York. In enacting a warrant for the arrest of a man who failed to appear in court for a DWI conviction, the department summarily punished the entire family by demolishing their home.
Consequently, Mrs. Danby and her two children have had all stability wrenched from their life. I implore you to take responsibility for the ill-considered tactics of the Ithaca S.W.A.T. team and contribute to the Cady Relief Fund.
Checks can be made payable to Danby Federated Church. Write “Cady Relief Fund” in the memo section and mail to:
