Strike Down Abortion Ban

Target: Speaker of the House John Boehner

Goal: Strike down ban on abortions after 20 weeks

A Republican-controlled Congress intends to issue a ban on abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy, violating the rights that were given during the Roe versus Wade Supreme Court ruling. This would be a grave violation of reproductive rights for women, as many scientists disagree with this ruling. A similar ban tried to be passed, but was struck down by Democrats in 2014. Tell Speaker of the House John Boehner that this ban cannot go into law, as it would place the lives of many women in jeopardy and force them through dangerous and illegal procedures to abort their babies.

Abortions of this type are referred to as “fetal pain” procedures because it’s believed that the fetus is sentient after 20 weeks of pregnancy. If an abortion were to be done at or after this time, the fetus would experience pain. It is also believed that the fetus would be able to survive outside the womb, so long as it received medical aid.

Unfortunately, doctors are not in agreement. Doctors believe that a fetus can survive outside of the womb around 24 to 28 weeks, which is considered the legal point of viability. No baby has been able to survive outside the fetus at an earlier time, and research has revealed that a fetus cannot feel pain until they are at least 24 to 28 weeks old. It is unfortunate that a 20-week ban on abortions is becoming increasingly popular on a state level, but members of Congress are trying to make this a federal law.

Many opponents to this ban are outraged. These politicians merely want to force women to carry out their pregnancies to term, even if these pregnancies are deemed dangerous or fatal to the woman and fetus. This ban would place undue harm and stress on low-income women, who often have to save up to get an abortion. Those who could not afford a legal abortion might seek other means, such as hangers or self harm to terminate the pregnancy. These would bring undue harm to a woman and Speaker of the House John Boehner needs to understand these issues. Sign this petition and urge Congress not to pass this ban.

Dear Speaker of the House John Boehner,

It astounds me that in this day and age Congress would be willing to pass a ban on 20-week abortions. Women’s rights include reproductive rights and Congress wishes to take these away from women. That is unacceptable. The United States is known for standing up for human rights and it would be incredibly hypocritical of the nation to pass this ban.

There would be undue consequences if you allow this nation wide ban on 20-week abortions to pass. Women should have a say in what they do with their bodies, but the government continues to monitor and force its ideologies on the female populace. I urge you not to pass this ban, as there is no scientific backing and it violates the reproductive rights of American women.
