Save Deer from Mine Expansion

Mule deer

Target: Amy Lueders, State Director of Nevada’s Bureau of Land Management

Goal: Stop the expansion of a toxic gold mine to protect mule deers’ migratory route.

A large population of Ruby Mountain mule deer is in danger by the proposed expansion of one of America’s largest gold mines. The mine seeks to expand operations by more than 4,000 acres. These migrating deer will suffer from this expansion project that plans to run through its primary migratory route. Action must be taken now to protect Nevada’s largest deer population.

Known as Bald Mountain Mine, this site is run by Barrick Gold Corp. in Elko, Nevada. The expansion will not only seek an increase in land acreage but also require the construction of an electric transmission line and a road. The project will disrupt the deer’s winter migration. During extremely harsh winters, deer tend to migrate more than 100 miles south looking for suitable winter habitat. If this project is approved, the deer would have to wind through deep open pits, ore and waste piles, and across haul routes. When barriers exist in a migration route, the herd must use more energy and some individuals do not survive. Mule deer have experienced a decline in population since the 1980s. This gold mine expansion will diminish the population even more.

Nevada’s wildlife is at stake. By signing this petition, you are urging Nevada’s Bureau of Land Management’s to deny Barrick’s request for expansion.

Dear Director Lueders,

The Ruby Mountain mule deer population is a coveted species of Nevada. However, the expansion of Barrick’s gold mine threatens this species’ migratory route. Barrick Gold Corp. wants to expand Bald Mountain Mine by more than 4,000 acres as well as construct a transmission line and a haul route. This project will significantly impact the mule deer population, especially during harsh winters when the population travels south for suitable winter habitat.

If the expansion is approved, deer would have to wind through deep open pits, ore and waste piles, and across haul routes. The mine’s expansion will create barriers in the deer’s migration route. When barriers exist, the herd must use more energy, which results in unexpected deaths. I beg you to please deny the request for this expansion. The mule deer population in Nevada has been on the decline since the 1980s. This expansion project will only exacerbate the population’s already diminishing numbers.  Please take action to protect Nevada’s wildlife.
