Target: Governor of Oklahoma Mary Fallin
Goal: End fracking in Oklahoma due to rise in earthquakes
Before 2008 Oklahoma averaged one magnitude three earthquake a year. Now, the state experiences more than a dozen of these earthquakes per year and it’s thanks to fracking. Unfortunately, many citizens in the state don’t realize that underground drilling is the problem even though a vast majority of the population work in the industry. What is also concerning is that drilling doesn’t just affect Oklahoma, the state of Texas has also experienced abnormal earthquake activity. It is obvious that fracking is becoming problematic and the governor of Oklahoma should ban this operation immediately, as it will lead to greater environmental harm and destruction of human property.
In 2011, a magnitude 5.7 earthquake killed two people and damaged property in Prague, Oklahoma. The state had experienced earthquakes in recent years, but hadn’t felt one hit this hard before. The incident sparked a discussion about fracking and how it was affecting the state. While many scientists can attest to underground drilling being the cause of these ground shaking tremors, very little has been done legislation wise to stop the drilling.
What is also concerning is the rate of earthquakes occurring in Oklahoma in comparison to California, an earthquake prone state. In 2014, Oklahoma became the most seismically active state in the Lower 48, with 564 quakes that were over a magnitude 3. California only had half that many quakes in the same year. And unlike California, Oklahoma is not well equipped to handle earthquakes. Their buildings are not meant to withstand ground tremors, and if drilling persists, strong earthquakes will occur.
Many in Oklahoma work in the fracking industry, but this operation is hurting the landscape and its people. Sign this petition and tell Governor Mary Fallin to ban hydraulic fracking in the state, as Oklahoma is not equipped to face strong seismic activity.
Dear Governor Mary Fallin,
Recently the state of Oklahoma experienced an alarming amount of seismic activity. This activity is extremely abnormal, and scientists blame it on hydraulic fracking. This industry has constantly increased the rate of earthquakes in Oklahoma, and the state has surpassed California in seismic activity. I find this fact to be extremely concerning and I urge you to do something before your state is hit with a disaster that it cannot handle.
I implore you to ban fracking in Oklahoma. I understand that your state depends heavily on this industry for its economy, but the environment is not worth destroying just to earn profits. There are other consequences that come with fracking, consequences that I urge you to research. Stop the industry from doing more harm to the environment and its creatures.
