Target: Robert Schostak, Republican National Committee Michigan State Chairman
Goal: Fire Republication National Committee member Dave Agema for bigoted comments
An official in the Michigan branch of the the Republican National Committee recently used the tragedies in France as a call to arms against Islam and Muslims around the world. These comments are just the most recent in his long history of racist, anti-Muslim, and homophobic rhetoric. Demand that the Republican National Committee hold Dave Agema accountable for his bigotry and fire him immediately.
Agema is virulently bigoted against Muslims and Islam, and most recently used the tragic terrorist attacks in France as a political pawn to grandstand about and justify his hate on his public Facebook page. In the fearmongering rhetoric that has become all too common among the political right, Agema conflated all Muslims with terrorists, said that the United States has rightly been at war with Islam since the founding of the nation, asserted that Islam is a backwards “6th century religion bent on world domination, elimination of Christianity and the Jewish religion,” and claimed that the imposition of Sharia law on American courts was an imminent threat. His whole statement is nothing more than a call to arms against an enemy “sworn to our destruction” that “political correctness” has kept us from seeing.
Agema is reciting the same old talking points that the far right has been relying on to demonize Muslims for years, but that makes them no less dangerous, especially considering that he is in a position of power in one of the country’s main two political parties. Sign the petition below to demand that he be fired immediately.
Dear Chairman Schostak,
I am writing you today about Dave Agema, one of the committeemen of your Michigan Republican Party. He has demonstrated himself to be a deeply bigoted individual. In our modern political atmosphere, there is no place for a person with views like his.
The attitudes I am referring to are those he most recently posted on his public Facebook page regarding the recent terrorist attacks in France. Agema used the tragedies as a chance to fearmonger about Islam and Muslims the world over, but especially those in the United States, implying that there is a vast conspiracy by them to destroy America as we know it. Agema urged that we “wake up and identify the enemy” before it’s too late. There’s not much room for interpretation in what he is saying–he is clearly calling for distrust of, and violence against, Muslims in the United States and abroad. It should be emphasized that these are just the most recent in a long line of downright dangerous comments about Muslims, as well racist remarks about people of color and homophobic remarks about gay people.
How are these comments at all appropriate? Muslims in the United States are already targets for violence because they are held accountable for the actions of Muslim extremists. Why would the Republican Party endorse that? I demand that you hold Agema accountable for his hatemongering and fire him at once.
