Target: President Barack Obama
Goal: Stop plan to spend up to $1 trillion on upgrading the US’ nuclear arsenal
President Obama promised a ‘nuclear-free world’ when he was campaigning, but now up to $1 trillion is going to be spent on upgrading the US’ nuclear arsenal as a part of a 30-year plan. This hardly seems like the path to creating a nuclear-free world, and President Obama should be held accountable for his promises and actions. Please let Obama know that his plan to invest this much money in nuclear weapons is unacceptable, and that he has to stay true to the promises he made during his campaign.
Nuclear weapons do not promise security and safety. They simply make the stakes higher and eventually make it more dangerous for everyone around the world. When people voted for Obama they sent the message that they are not interested in their tax dollars being invested in nuclear power. There are plenty of important places where this money could be used, which could better benefit people in the US and represent what they voted for when they elected Obama. One trillion dollars could make a huge difference in education, health, housing, jobs, environmental protection, and other programs instead of risking Americans and their children by investing in nuclear weapons.
Availability of nuclear weapons does not improve security and does not make people feel safer. The impact of actually using nuclear weapons is simply too hazardous and costly, and the US improving its nuclear weapons puts billions of lives at risk all around the world. Please let Obama know that this is not what he was elected for, and demand that he stop this plan immediately.
Dear Mr. President,
I am writing to you about your recent plan to upgrade the US’ nuclear arsenal with a budget of up to $1 trillion. When you ran for office, you used the platform of a ‘nuclear-free world’ and promised to work to disarm the world from the risk of nuclear weapons. This plan is completely contradictory with what you promised your constituents and should not be carried out. Please stop this plan before any more money is spent on weapons, instead of on what the American people really want and need.
The US already spends about $16 billion a year on its nuclear arsenal, and that is expected to increase by 10 percent annually for the next five years. If you intend to disarm the world of nuclear weapons, pouring more money into arming the US is not the way to do it. This money could be spent on education, health, welfare, economic development, or many other programs that could benefit the lives of families in the US. Please act now to stop this plan from moving forward, and don’t make the world more dangerous for everyone by investing in nuclear weapons.
