Target: Robert L. Hinkle, U.S. District Court Judge
Goal: Applaud lifting of ban on same-sex marriage in Florida
In a monumental decision, a judge in the state of Florida struck down a same-sex marriage ban on the grounds that it was unconstitutional. A recent petition on Force Change called for this action and it has met with success. Florida now joins the 35 other states that have legalized the practice and will hopefully set an example for those few that are still clinging to ideology or a past that never existed. The removal of the ban opened the floodgates for hundreds of same-sex couples to marry and prove to the world that their love is legitimate. This decision is the result of countless people working countless hours and all of their hard work deserves to be applauded.
The ruling is a pleasant relief to those who have been living in Florida since 2008 when the same-sex marriage ban was put into place. Since then, conservative voices and groups that say they care about “families” have been working hard to keep the ban in place and maintain that marriage be only between “one mand and one woman.”
Several counties held ceremonies at their respective courthouses for large groups of people wishing to be married together as a show of solidarity. While many are overjoyed by the news of the decision, there are always those who will be unhappy with social change. Several counties in Northern Florida refused to preform any marriage ceremonies, same-sex or otherwise, on the day that the decision went into effect.
All of the, no doubt, hundreds of people involved with making this court case and final decision possible deserve our respect, admiration, and deep thanks. One man, during his ceremony, removed a large silver bracelet that he wore in place of a wedding ring from his wrist and said that he is now free from his “shackle of inequality.” Please sign below to show thanks to those that made this possible and to encourage other states to follow in Florida’s footsteps.
Dear Judge Hinkle,
I am writing to personally thank you and all of those involved with getting Florida’s same-sex marriage ban stricken down. The ban was a blight on the very principles that people in the United States hold dear and your finding that the ban was unconstitutional was correct in every sense. All people are created equal, all people deserve equal rights, and even more importantly: all people deserve equal respect.
As you know, many were against your decision; people who claim to care about families or traditional values. The truth is that a family doesn’t have to have any real defining characteristics but love, and that is what you have allowed the hundreds of people getting married right now. Florida is now the 36th state in which same-sex marriage is legal, but there is still a long road ahead of all who believe in justice and equality. Thank you for making the right call and for setting an example that the remaining 14 states can follow.
