Congratulate Country’s First Transgender Mayor

Target: Madhu Bai Kinnar, Raigrah’s Mayoral Election Winner

Goal: Congratulate first transgender woman to be elected mayor in India

A transgender woman from a low caste just made history in India by becoming the country’s first transgender mayor. Transgender people are extremely underrepresented in politics worldwide, so this is an important step not just for India, but for the whole world. Please join us in congratulating Madhu Bai Kinnar for her achievement, which will hopefully help other transgenders to be elected to public office.

Kinnar is a member of the Dalit caste, one of the lower castes in India, and she was making a living by singing and dancing on trains before running for office. She said it was her community that asked her to enter public life, and stated that “People have shown faith in me. I consider this win as love and blessing of people for me. I’ll put my best efforts to accomplish their dreams.” Kinnar beat her rival, who belongs to the Prime Minister’s party, by more than 4,500 votes and became the mayor of Raigrah in the state of Chhattisgarh.

Only a few months ago transgenders in India won another great victory when the country’s highest court recognized transgenders as a third gender, which allows them more self-determination, legal status, and better protection under the law. Hopefully this positive trend will continue improving the situation of transgender people in India, and maybe in other places as well. Please congratulate Mayor Kinnar and let her know that her victory means a lot to people all around the world.

Dear Mayor Kinnar,

I am writing to congratulate you on your recent victory in the race for mayor in Raigrah and on becoming India’s first transgender mayor. I know this is a significant personal achievement for you, but it is also an exciting and positive victory for LGBTQ people and their allies all around the world. I have been personally touched by seeing the recent positive changes in India and its treatment of transgender people, and your victory is a big part of that.

Transgender people are underrepresented and under-served all around the world, and we need countries to make progress and serve as an example for others. You have made India one of those examples, and I hope that other countries follow your lead. Transgender politicians are much too rare, but hopefully your victory could help change that.

I know that you will make a great mayor and will do a lot of important work for your people. I wish you good luck going forward in politics, and hope that others will be inspired to follow your example.
