Target: Mihael Zmajlović, Minister of Environmental Protection and Nature in Croatia
Goal: Protect the Croatian Adriatic Sea from the dangers of offshore drilling
Offshore drilling damages the wildlife and integrity of oceans and shorelines. The drilling operation contaminates the water with drilling fluid and metal cuttings. An oil leak or spill causes catastrophic environmental damage. Offshore drilling agreements have been assigned for a coveted area known for tourism. Please urge Croatia’s Minister of Environmental Protection and Nature to stop offshore drilling in the Adriatic Sea.
Croatia draws tourists because of its natural beauty and picturesque coast. However, the iconic waters of the Croatian Adriatic Sea could be changed forever. Fifteen exploration blocks for offshore drilling have been granted for Croatia’s waters. Water quality is bound to decline. One drilling platform discharges 90,000 metric tons of drilling fluids and metal cuttings. Pollution in the ocean will create a huge stress on plants and wildlife. Currently, 123 fish species in the Adriatic Sea are endangered. If an oil spill were to happen, the water would be flooded with darkness, starving sea grasses with the sunlight they need to survive. If sea grasses and other ocean plants die off, the fish species living in grassy habitats will suffer.
Oil drilling in this precious area is not a good idea. These offshore drills will have a detrimental effect on the environment. Croatia’s fishing and tourism business sectors will suffer. By signing this petition, you are urging the Croatian Minister of Environmental Protection and Nature to deny any offshore drilling in the Croatian Adriatic Sea.
Dear Minister Zmajlović,
Croatia is a coveted tourism destination. The picturesque coastline and the pristine and natural sea give Croatia its charm. By allowing offshore drilling, the Croatian Adriatic Sea faces an interesting future. Offshore drill operators cannot guarantee safety and security from leaks and contamination. You must take action to save this sea from offshore drilling.
The Adriatic Sea is home to 123 endangered fish species. Drilling platforms can discharge tons of drilling fluids and metal cuttings causing harm and detriment to aquatic life. An oil leak clouds the water and starves oceanic plants of sunlight. If sea grasses and other plants die, fish species living in these plant habitats die as well. These endangered species must be protected. Please take action to stop offshore drilling off the Croatian coast.
