Save Mohave Desert Lizard

Gila Monster

Target: U.S. Fish and Wildlife Director Daniel Ashe

Goal: Protect the Mojave desert population of the Gila monster by protecting it under the Endangered Species Act

The Gila monster is a unique reptile whose range spans from Utah to Mexico. While its population in the Mojave Desert area of Utah used to thrive, recently it has been declining. Urban development in the surrounding areas has been a huge threat to Utah’s Gila monster population.

The Gila monster is a fascinating reptile. It is the only venomous lizard that can be found in the U.S., however, it only seems to attack when provoked. It also has very unique coloring and patterns. The Gila monster is an important part to the diverse ecosystem found in the Mojave Desert.

Urban development has threatened all of the species in the area of the Mojave Desert. Ironically, the beauty that attracts tourism to the area also contributes to destroying the area. Commercial and residential development threatens the habitat of the Gila monster and has contributed to its decline in numbers.

Please help protect the biodiversity and unique beauty of the Mojave Desert in Utah by asking the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect the Gila monster. The population in Utah is in dire need of protection by the Endangered Species Act, which would help ensure that this unique species is not lost from the Mohave Desert. Please sign the petition below to help save the fascinating and ecologically crucial Gila monster from extinction.

Dear Director Ashe,

The Gila monster is a vital species that contributes to the uniqueness of the Mojave Desert. Bearing a unique coloring and pattern, it is the only venomous lizard that can be found in the U.S. However, due to commercial and residential development in the area surrounding the Mojave Desert in Utah, the Gila monster’s population has been steadily declining.

The beauty of the Mojave Desert has brought tourism and commercial development to the area. Unfortunately, it is this development that has ironically contributed to the destruction of the desert as well. Consequently, the habitat of the Gila monster and many other species has been effected.

The Gila monster is a key part of the biodiversity of the Mojave Desert. The species contributes to the environment and unique beauty the Mojave Desert holds. Please help to protect the Gila monster living in the Mojave Desert in Utah by listing it under the Endanger Species Act—the Gila monster population depends on it.
