Praise Spay and Neuter Program for Stray Cats

Target: Mahin Bahrami, Co-Founder of the Middle East Animal Foundation

Goal: Applaud efforts to sterilize stray and feral cats before adopting them to new homes or re-releasing them

Stray and feral cats will be trapped, sterilized, and re-released or adopted in a bid to control unwanted cat populations in Dubai. The program is the first of its kind in the United Arab Emirates, and will also include the installation of a feeding station for the released cats. Created by activist Mahin Bahrami, the program aims to control the population in order to reduce instances of sickness, disease, and injury, which often prove fatal.

Stray cats have been very common in Dubai’s Jebel Ali Free Zone for years. Previous attempts at population control saw animals trapped and removed from the area, though new cats then moved in to replace them. Cat populations remained so high that fierce competition between them resulted in brutal fighting over food or territory, and fatal diseases spread quickly throughout entire cat colonies.

Volunteers for the new program trap cats at night and have them examined by a veterinarian before sterilizing them. They are then released back into the wild after a day of recovery. So far, over one third of the animals trapped have been adopted to new homes. Strays born in the wild that are less comfortable around humans are sterilized then released back to the area where they were first trapped. One third of the trapped animals died from various diseases and injuries.

By sterilizing the cats, they are not only helping to control the population, but helping to reduce aggression in the males and make fighting less common. A reduced population will enjoy more resources, more space, and less disease. Sign the petition below to praise Mahin Bahrami for her efforts to compassionately address an excess of stray and feral cats.

Dear Ms. Bahrami,

A new program has successfully trapped over 30 stray and feral cats, sterilized them, and released them to an adoptive home or back to the wild. The program, which aims to address an overpopulation of cats in Dubai’s Jebel Ali Free Zone, takes a new approach at previously failed efforts.

Because of your work, stray and feral cats are likely to enjoy a drop in disease and territorial aggression, two of the main killers of Dubai’s strays. Some of the more socialized ones will even get second chances in new homes. We, the undersigned, commend your work to improve circumstances for hundreds of Dubai’s cats.

I am disabled and live in Burnaby, next to Vancouver, BC. I phoned Canada Post about this, and a nice lady assured me that they would continue to deliver to the disabled. A mistake? It looks like it. I’ll try the survey mentioned by Mr. Nazer, and I’ll definitely hobble with my cane to every candidates meeting that happens here before the next federal election and present this issue. I have been a letter carrier for Canada Post in Burnaby, Vancouver, Prince Rupert and Montreal, until I broke my hip thirty years ago. It was like family when I worked for it, and it’s even more like family now. I can’t lose it!

  2. Omg…f’ing pieces of sub-human garbage need to be torched and blown off the map!
I’m sick and tired of innocent and voiceless animals being brutally
tortured and abused by this sick disgusting species of monsters taking
up space on this planet! To ALL you lawmakers out there, start earning
your money, and enforce strict animals rights laws, or get out of
office…it’s that simple!!! I will no longer support anyone that
allows such horriffic abuse to animals to continue! It’s that simple!!!
    Got it!!!
