Target: Sultan Qaboos bin Sa’id
Goal: Disclose the whereabouts of a detained activist and ensure his release from Oman
Saeed Jaddad, an Omani activist, has been held incommunicado by security forces following a raid on his home. His family has not been given any news of his whereabouts and his health is at risk. Sign this petition to urge the sultan of Oman to ensure that Jaddad’s treatment is in line with international human rights standards.
Jaddad is a businessman and activist who has been an outspoken critic of the Omani government. He has previously been arrested and has served prison time, including time spent in solitary confinement. Most of his criminal charges stem from pieces he has written about the government, a violation of his right to free speech.
On the night he was arrested, Jaddad watched as his home was raided by security forces who took his phone and computers. He was arrested without charge and his family has no idea where he has been taken. They are worried for his health, as he requires several medications that were left behind when he was taken.
Kidnapping citizens in the middle of the night is not the hallmark of a humane and just modern country. Sign the petition and remind the Omani authorities that they are bound by international human rights agreements, as well as the ideals of justice and liberty, and that they are duty-bound to disclose the whereabouts of Saeed Jaddad and ensure that his treatment is in line with international human rights standards.
Dear Sultan bin Sa’id,
I urge you to immediately disclose the whereabouts and well-being of activist Saeed Jaddad, who was arrested following a raid on his home and who has been held incommunicado ever since. His family is desperate for news of him, and they are concerned that his serious health issues are going untreated as long as he remains imprisoned. Please ensure that justice is done: reveal Jaddad’s whereabouts, ensure that he is treated fairly, and either charge him with an internationally recognizable offense or release him immediately.
Jaddad has been arrested in the past, but his charges have not stemmed from violence or threats. He has been imprisoned solely for exercising one of his most basic human rights–the right to free speech. Peaceful activism is not a crime–even when it runs counter to the dominant political sentiment–and Jaddad should not be punished for the nonviolent expression of his own political beliefs.
Furthermore, it is likely that Jaddad’s incommunicado detention has left him vulnerable to human rights violations. His health is certainly at risk; his arrest prevented him from taking with him medications he requires for serious health conditions. It is imperative that he have access to the medicine and medical care he needs.
Saeed Jaddad is entitled to fair treatment by his government. I urge you to ensure that justice is done.
