Praise High School Students for Saving Endangered Turtles

Target: Students at the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science in Manahawkin, N.J.

Goal: Thank high school students for raising legislative awareness about endangered diamondback terrapin turtle

The diamondback terrapin turtles would soon be extinct if it weren’t for the efforts of New Jersey high school students. Their efforts have led to a proposed bill, which would prohibit the capture of this species. These students should be thanked for their persistent efforts in making positive environmental change.

The diamondback terrapins are a species of turtle that lives in the United States’ coastal waters from Massachusetts to Texas. Harvesting of their meat was popular in the early 20th century, which caused their population to rapidly diminish. Since then, the species has been unable to recover their population. Factors such as climate change and habitat construction are also affecting current populations.

Students at the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science in Manahawkin, New Jersey have long been working to raise awareness for the endangered diamondback terrapins. Their efforts eventually reached the attention of New Jersey State Senator Jeff Van Drew and Assemblyman Bob Andrzejczak, who cosponsored a bill banning the catching of the turtles.

If the bill passes, diamondback terrapins will have the protection they need and a chance at regaining their population. Please sign the petition below to thank the students of the Marine Academy of Technology and Environmental Science for creating this opportunity.

Dear Students,

Thank you for raising awareness for the endangered diamondback terrapins. Many species are negatively impacted by factors such as hunting, climate change, and habitat destruction and it is important that we make efforts to save these creatures one by one. Your actions will hopefully give this species the protection that they need to rebuild their population and thrive once again.

It is impressive that a group of high school students was able to raise enough awareness to influence legislation to take action. It is great that Senator Jeff Van Drew and Assemblyman Bob Andrzejczak listened to your requests and are now pushing to stop the captivity of these turtles.

Thank you again for your efforts and we encourage you to continue to pursue similar issues in the future to help improve our world.
