Success: Dog Saved From Being Euthanized

Target: Gregory Castle, CEO of Best Friends Animal Society

Goal: Thank an animal welfare society for adopting a healthy dog that was to be euthanized and cremated as requested in its deceased owner’s will

After the death of pet-owner Connie Ley in November 2014, the fate of her nine-year-old German shepherd dog, Bela, was uncertain. According to Ley’s attorney, Doug Demure, Ley had written in her will that Bela was to be euthanized, cremated and buried next to his deceased owner, or to be taken in to a pet sanctuary.

There was much opposition to Bela being subjected to such an unfair fate, as indicated by a previous petition, which called for the rejection of the deceased owner’s wish to have Bela euthanized and buried. Administrators of a deceased individual’s will are required to carry out the provisions of the will, including the euthanasia of a perfectly healthy pet. However, such an act has been rejected in the past by judges deeming the killing of a healthy pet to be unethical or against public policy.

After hearing about Bela’s situation, the media contacted the Best Friends Animal Society and notified them of the dilemma that befell Bela. The Best Friends Animal Society is an animal welfare society which pioneered the no-kill movement in pet shelters. The Best Friends Animal Society agreed to adopt Bela, and he was picked up by volunteers and is staying on a special animal sanctuary in Kanab, Utah. There, Bela will be cared for by trainers and animal behavior specialists, and he will be able to live the rest of his life peacefully.

By signing the petition below, you are thanking the Best Friends Animal Society for rescuing Bela by adopting him into a pet sanctuary. Thanks to the kindness of the Best Friends Animal Society faculty, Bela was saved from a cruel and pointless death.

Dear Gregory Castle,

Although pet owners have sole-authority over the welfare of their pets, the fate written for Bela in the will of Bela’s deceased owner was outright inconceivable. To euthanize and cremate a perfectly healthy dog is outrageous, and Bela does not deserve that kind of treatment. This deplorable act would not be fair to Bela, as he is healthy and should be able to continue living, even though his owner is deceased.

Thank you for rescuing Bella from this cruel fate by taking him in. Thanks to your efforts, Bela is now in the best care at the special animal sanctuary in Kanab, Utah, where he is receiving great care and treatment. Bela’s future is no doubt promising, and he will enjoy a happy and full life.
